Briefs: Jordan Telecom launches DSL voice service

Jordan Telecom this week became the first Middle East company to offer double-play broadband voice and data service.

The Livebox service consists of Voice over Internet Protocol over DSL (VoIPoDSL) with technical assistance from Alcatel and is a prelude to eventual triple-play service in Jordan in the near future.

Jordan Telecom officials said in a news release that VoIP was an essential service for telecoms hoping to serve the Middle East market.

Chief Strategy Officer Luc Savage said Jordan's new licensing and regulatory regimes, which were introduced earlier this year, opened the door to expanded broadband services such as the video connectivity that will come during the second phase of the company's deployment.
