Briefs: Wireless access set for Canadian railroad

PointShot Wireless of Ottawa, Canada, says it has launched the first major deployment of wireless Internet access on trains in North America.

The wireless service is being implemented on VIA Rail Canada Inc.'s lines along the Quebec City to Windsor corridor.

Passengers will have access to the Internet using a laptop computer with 802.11 wireless capabilities or any other similarly equipped mobile device, such as a personal digital assistant, PointShot said. No special hardware or configuration is required.

As Canada's national passenger rail service, VIA Rail Canada serves more than 450 communities with an 8,700-mile (14,000-kilometer) network of inter-city, transcontinental and regional trains.
