Briefs: Microsoft to scrub out Sony piracy rootkit

Sony's much-maligned anti-piracy program is being targeted as malware by Microsoft.

Tuesday's announcement marks a major blow to the Extended Copy Protection (XCP) software Sony has been using to prevent illegal copying of music CDs, but which has since come under fire for using a rootkit that opens the door to the infection of PCs used to play the disc.

Windows will formally announce Tuesday that its anti-spyware programs for Windows will be updated to include the XCP rootkit signature.
