Briefs: Telkonet brings broadband to U.K. hotels

British Best Western hotels are being wired for broadband by Telkonet, a U.S. company that specializes in providing Internet access over existing wiring.

Telkonet announced Monday it had started the project in conjunction with prime contractor Divine Internet in September and planned to have more than 200 Best Western hotels in the United Kingdom hooked up by the end of the year.

Best Western officials said in a statement that the program was aimed at making 15 percent of its rooms worldwide capable of Internet access as well as potential value-added services such as on-demand video and Voice over Internet Protocol telephone service.

Officials said business travelers in particular have come to expect to have Internet access in their hotel rooms.
