India, Sri Lanka plan telecom cable link

An agreement has been signed to launch construction of an underwater communications cable linking India and Sri Lanka.

The $18 million, 202-mile cable will have a capacity of 20 gigabits and will handle voice, video and data traffic between the two nations, the Press Trust of India reported over the weekend.

The project involves BSNL, NEC and Sri Lanka Telecom and will be completed in about eight months. The cable will stretch between Tuticorin, India, and Mt. Lavinia in Sri Lanka.
