X-FAB backs out from buying Infineon plant

Infineon Technologies said Wednesday X-FAB Semiconductor Foundries will not be taking over its plant in Perlach.

The Munich-based chipmaker said in a news release that while both companies were "prepared to make concessions to continue operations ... there is no long-term guarantee of running the Perlach site with economic success."

"We regret the development and would have welcomed selling the site and preserving the jobs. The discussions were very constructive and included long and intensive negotiations. Nevertheless a takeover by X-FAB was not possible due to the specific conditions in Perlach," stated Reinhard Ploss, general manager of the automotive and industrial group at Infineon.

X-FAB is based in Erfurt, Germany, and makes silicon wafers for analog-digital integrated circuits.
