Intel launches WiMax push in SE Asia

Intel has launched a campaign to bolster the growth of WiMax in Southeast Asia by offering consulting and other technical expertise.

The Silicon Valley company's "Asian Broadband Campaign" will assist officials in Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand to prepare for and conduct WiMax trials and will be ready to pitch in with other nations if they desire.

The scheduled tests will begin around the end of the year. Further trials are planned in Vietnam in 2006.

Intel officials said in a release Thursday that WiMax expansion in Southeast Asia is part of the United Nations Millennium Development program to use technology to help boost education and economic development.

"Intel believes that technology, and specifically WiMax can be one of the foundations to help these countries reach these goals," said Intel Mobility Group Vice President Sean Maloney.
