Google said Thursday Vinton Cerf will be its so-called chief Internet evangelist.

The Internet search engine said that Cerf, a former executive at MCI, will help Google build its network infrastructure, architectures and systems.

Cerf is "clearly one of the great technology leaders of our time," Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said in a news release, pointing out that he had co-designed the protocols that were used to develop the Internet's underlying architecture. "His vision for technology helped create entire industries that have transformed many parts of our lives. We are honored to welcome him to Google," Schmidt added.
