Thermogenesis is the biological process by which organisms generate heat through metabolic reactions, contributing to the maintenance of body temperature and energy homeostasis. It encompasses obligatory thermogenesis, arising from basal metabolic processes and digestion, and adaptive or facultative thermogenesis, which is induced by environmental or nutritional stimuli such as cold exposure or overfeeding. Key mechanisms include mitochondrial uncoupling, particularly via uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in brown and beige adipose tissue, shivering in skeletal muscle, and futile substrate cycles. Thermogenesis is tightly regulated by the sympathetic nervous system and endocrine signals, especially thyroid hormones and catecholamines.
