Powerful new US-Indian satellite will track Earth's changing surface
Data from NISAR will improve our understanding of such phenomena as earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides, as well as damage to infrastructure.
Geodesy is the Earth science devoted to determining the size, shape, gravitational field, and orientation in space of the Earth, as well as their temporal variations, with rigorous mathematical and physical models. It integrates terrestrial and space-based observation techniques—such as GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), satellite gravimetry, satellite altimetry, VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry), and SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging)—to establish global and regional reference frames, geoid models, and precise positioning systems. Geodesy underpins high-precision navigation, monitoring of crustal deformation, sea-level change, and mass redistribution in the Earth system, providing fundamental parameters for geophysics, oceanography, and climate research.

What do the Earth's gravitational field and the trajectories of satellites and space debris have in common? The Earth's gravitational field influences the orbits of our companions in space, while the changes in the orbits ...
