Page 2: Research news on Energy storage

Energy storage as a research area investigates materials, devices, and systems that reversibly capture and release energy with high efficiency, safety, and reliability, spanning electrical, electrochemical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical modalities. It encompasses advanced battery chemistries (e.g., lithium-based, sodium-based, multivalent, and solid-state systems), supercapacitors, hydrogen and other chemical fuels, phase-change and sensible/latent heat storage, and mechanical approaches such as compressed air or flywheels. Research focuses on fundamental charge, mass, and heat transport processes; interfacial and degradation phenomena; multi-scale modeling; techno-economic and lifecycle assessment; integration with power electronics and grids; and enabling high-penetration renewable energy and electrification of transport and industry.

Collective vibrations unlock fast ion flow in superionic crystals

In the race to develop safer, faster-charging solid-state batteries and more efficient thermoelectric conversion technologies, engineers and scientists have long faced a fundamental challenge: how to ensure ions move through ...

NASA fuel cell tests pave way for energy storage on the moon

With a small blue crane, four researchers hoist a cylindrical fuel cell, which looks like a stack of flattened silver and gold soda cans bundled together, into the air and lower it into a rectangular cart on wheels. A tangle ...

Designing in situ power stations for future Mars missions

You're in the lab analyzing Martian regolith samples within your cozy Mars habitat serving on the fifth human mission to Mars. The power within the habitat has been flowing flawlessly thanks to the MARS-MES (Mars Atmospheric ...

Cell membranes may store memories after electrical stimulation

The science of memories has been pursued and studied since the days of ancient Greece and Aristotle. Today, research conducted by Dima Bolmatov, assistant professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Texas Tech University, ...
