Page 17: Research news on DNA sequencing

DNA sequencing is a set of laboratory methods for determining the precise linear order of nucleotides (A, C, G, T) in a DNA molecule. Core methodological classes include Sanger sequencing, which uses chain-terminating dideoxynucleotides and capillary electrophoresis for high-fidelity, low-throughput analysis, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms, which employ massively parallel sequencing-by-synthesis, sequencing-by-ligation, or nanopore-based readout for high-throughput, genome-scale applications. These methods entail library preparation, clonal or single-molecule amplification (except in true single-molecule approaches), signal detection, and computational base-calling, followed by quality control and downstream bioinformatic analysis.

Corpses leave clues behind in the soil long after they're gone

It is not uncommon for a body to be moved after a murder, usually to hide or eliminate evidence. And while the Arizona desert may seem like the perfect place to commit such a crime, a new study shows that a cadaver can still ...

Scientists trace crop viruses back to the last Ice Age

Long before humans cultivated crops or sailed between continents, a group of plant viruses was already evolving among wild plants in Eurasia. According to a new international study published in Plant Disease, the ancestors ...

Genetic mapping of rice stink bug aids crop pest control

Even though farmers have been dealing with rice stink bugs as pests since the 1880s, entomologists are still getting to know them at the genetic level. A first-of-its-kind study published on the genetics of rice stink bugs ...

Genetic discovery could lead to faster growing duckweed

Duckweed is the fastest-growing flowering plant, but new knowledge of duckweed genetics discovered by Adelaide University researchers could lead to even faster growing rates. The research team, led by Professor Nikolai Borisjuk ...

Genetic discovery offers hope for global banana farming

Scientists have pinpointed crucial genetic resistance to a fungal disease that threatens the global banana supply in a wild subspecies of the fruit. In a valuable step forward for banana breeding programs, Dr. Andrew Chen ...
