Bioturbation affects redox zonation, nutrient cycling, and preservation potential of sedimentary structures, body fossils, and chemical signatures, thereby playing a critical role in benthic ecosystem functioning, trace fossil formation, and interpretation of paleoenvironmental and stratigraphic records.
