Report: Consensus on India telecom sharing

Dec 28, 2005

A consensus has reportedly been reached in India on the contentious issue of telecom infrastructure sharing.

Sources told the Business Standard Wednesday that the Department of Telecommunications and major telecom operators had agreed to base future discussions on infrastructure sharing on a broad model of government-supported infrastructure expansion.

The projects will be subject to bidding based on a composite benchmark that will be used on fixed prices for specific infrastructure components.

Five other proposals for infrastructure sharing were scrapped, the sources said.

Access to infrastructure by start-up telecom companies is seen in India as critical to the expansion of broadband, wireless and fixed-line telephony in the countryside.
