Taiwan hospital wireless project launched

Chunghwa Telecom is taking part in a project to bring wireless services to Taiwan's hospital system.

The $7 million program announced Thursday also includes Cablesoft Tech and will establish WiFi, WiMax and third-generation mobile telecom service at four major Taipei hospitals.

Chunghwa will set up an indoor WiFi system at each of the hospitals as well as two outdoor WiMax stations that will interface with the WiFi network and the 3G network at a range of about 2 miles.

The result will be enhanced ability for patients to use wireless handsets to access their medical records, handle clinic registration paperwork and obtain consultations.

Doctors and hospital staff will be able to view patient records and X-rays and refer to various diagnostic procedures.
