Malnutrition not only negatively impacts health, but also causes poor healing and increased infection risks, lengthening hospital stays and further burdening an under-resourced system. One in three hospital patients are not being screened for malnutrition, despite the fact that 30%–40% of patients experience the issue, new Swinburne research has found. The study is published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics.

From asteroid mining to space rustling—what do we do when an asteroid threatens Earth?

Asteroids colliding with Earth might seem farfetched, but the planetary threat is real. Just this year news broke of an asteroid with a 1%–2% chance of a fatal collision occurring in 2032. While more recent measurements of Asteroid 2024 YR4 suggest the threat will not be realized this time, what about the next time?

Microcombs could be key in meeting bandwidth demands for artificial intelligence and data centers

A paper published by Swinburne University of Technology shows how a kind of "optical ruler," or frequency comb, can greatly increase bandwidth in today's data-saturated world. Integrated optical frequency comb sources, or microcombs, have driven major advances in spectroscopy, metrology and more. Their potential in data transmission is especially promising, exceeding speeds of one petabit per second—10 million times faster than a 100Mbit/s NBN connection.

Swinburne researchers have discovered unexpected and entirely new quantum behaviors that only occur in one-dimensional systems, such as electrical current. Their new paper, published in Physical Review Letters, explores a fundamental question in quantum physics: what happens when a single "impurity" particle, such as an atom or electron, is introduced into a tightly packed crowd of identical particles.
