Students at every grade need to learn climate science, expert says

The National Climate Assessment, released the day after Thanksgiving, offers motivation and opportunity to bring climate topics into the classroom at every grade level.

Even the youngest students are ready to learn about , according to Michael Wysession, professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis and executive director of the Teaching Center.

Wysession, who has co-authored more than 30 textbooks, helped write a position statement on teaching climate science adopted by the board of directors of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) in September 2018. The NSTA has a membership of more than 50,000 teachers and other educators at the K-12 grade levels.

It is extremely important to teach children about the science of and , and the roles humans play in affecting them, the NSTA statement said.

Science education at the K-12 grade levels is undergoing a revolution, according to Wysession, with most states shifting to a new way of teaching based upon the National Academy of Sciences' Framework for K–12 Science Education and the ensuing Next Generation Science Standards. The framework identifies a small number of "Big Ideas" for the science standards to focus on, and one of these is .

"The Next Generation Science Standards emphasize children devising solutions to the challenges of global warming," Wysession said. "But it will take study and understanding, and we need to do everything we can now to make sure that our students have the tools, interest and motivation they need to meet these challenges."

Students in early grades can think about the steps they can take to help take care of the earth such as recycling, re-using materials and limiting waste, Wysession suggested.

Students in higher grades should learn about the behind the greenhouse effect and how both natural factors and human activities change the climate. Students should also be critically analyzing the scientific validity of sources used in political debates about the causes of climate change, he said.

"As the recent National Climate Assessment report shows, the severe impacts of climate change are already affecting humans through severe weather events, decreases in , damages to the national economy and destruction of the biosphere," Wysession said.

"The report also points out that these impacts will be greatest for our children and their children—emphasizing the extreme importance of educating students about the ways that they can design solutions for the future challenges of climate change," he said.

This is why so many Republicans want to home school their children.

Science is fundamentally anti-God.

All of the over hyped "predictions" for the past several decades haven't happened. Global cooling/global warming/climate change, and now it's social, racial, economic and environ-mental (pun intended) JUSTICE (i.e. socialism, Karl Marks is smiling in his grave). So, let the public vote on it. All I Know is I don't want the US of A to be the USSA. It may be time to ammo up. Regards, denier, deplorable and retired engineer.

You mean what it says in the almanacs about oil and coal consumption? And in geoscience textbooks about how much atmosphere there is? And how much CO2 concentration produces most of the infrared extinction? And how long it stays in the atmosphere?

There's no way to lie about this stuff. And it's simple algebra.

No, they say the same thing the models tell us. Which you don't want to hear. The reason they're doing the models is because you can't do arithmetic. And want to censor the data.

This is a good idea!

And a very reasonable demand, as opposed to many comments here.

Don't you want your beloved US - statistically the home of those who erroneously thinks the science is politically "invented" - to be successful? Your own agencies believe you will pay 500 GUSD @ 2100 _and_ be down 10 % in GDP if you play politics instead of heading common knowledge.

Besides the - politically caused - belief that basic science is political, there is also the belief that experts are more amateurish than amateurs, or that home schooling - which is US only I think, and again a political "solution" - is not worse as IIRC statistics show it is. If so your home schooled kids will be left behind, US will be left behind (10 % GDP loss is like what happens after a market crash) as the rest of the world sloughs on and tries to fix its problems.

Oh well, US is not exactly known for leadership anymore.

-ctd-

I don't need to respond to the erroneous claims on climate/climate science - knowledge which ironically here is named "lies" - since there is no reference. I need only point to the IPCC science publications as my own reference.

But this is a real question/point:

"So the billions spent on climate models are a giant fraud eh?"

Well, no. You need to such sums to, first. get the instruments to collect massive data and then to aggregate it. The cost is easily ROI by warning for weather events and - of course - predicting climate. See how it will cost US 500 GUSD to 2100 alone if you *don't* use the data.

The basic greenhouse science however is not too complicated. And with aggregated data one can now lately and famously use a simple spreadsheat fit to show AGW beyond reasonable doubt - the warming signal (and of course the causal factor of GW gas release) is now so much stronger than climate noise! Everyone knows, or should know, this.

Homeschool students are increasingly being actively recruited by colleges."

Climate science is one of those things that is not only crucial for kids to understand but it's also perfect for showing how all the sciences interconnect: From chemistry to physics to biology.

At least half of people would rather not think. They'd rather feel good.

Until that day when stuff goes wrong. Then they'll start crying and moaning (and falling for any snake-oil salesman that promises a quick fix)
If it weren't so predictable it would be downright funny.
