Trump pullout from climate pact means even hotter world: report

If the US abandons its goals, temperatures will rise by 3.2 C by the end of the century
If the US abandons its goals, temperatures will rise by 3.2 C by the end of the century

US President Donald Trump's pullout from the Paris Agreement will push up global temperatures nearly half a degree Celsius (0.9 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2100, according to a report released Wednesday at UN climate talks in Bonn.

If all countries—including the United States—honour carbon-cutting pledges under the 196-nation treaty, the world would see 2.8 C of global warming above pre-industrial levels, the Climate Action Tracker (CAT) research group had previously calculated.

That is not nearly good enough to avoid climate catastrophe, scientists say.

The Paris pact, adopted in 2015, calls for capping the rise at "well below" 2 C, and even 1.5 C if possible, to avoid climate-addled future of extreme drought, deadly heatwaves and superstorms made more destructive by rising seas.

But if the US abandons its goals for reducing greenhouse gases, set under the Barack Obama administration, the end-of-century thermometer will climb even further to 3.2 C, the report showed.

"This is largely due to the fact that the United States is walking away from its 2030 target, and long-term 2050 goals," CAT said in a statement.

In 2015, the United States made a voluntary commitment to cut the country's emissions 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025. Last year, it also laid out a "mid-century strategy" that would see it's emissions slashed 80 percent compared to a 2005 benchmark.

China, India 'stepping up'

The annual analysis of the world's top 32 carbon polluters—accounting for more than 80 percent of global emissions—also showed that China and India have accelerated the transition toward greener economies.

"China's emissions growth has slowed dramatically: in the first decade of this century, its emissions grew by 110 percent, but between 2010 and 2015 growth slowed to only 16 percent," the report said.

Beijing is on track to fulfil it Paris pledge—a peak in CO2 emissions by 2030—a full decade ahead of schedule.

At the same time, CAT rates China's efforts as "highly insufficient," saying its targets are "ripe for an update."

After stagnating for three years, global CO2 emissions will rise two percent in 2017, dashing hopes they had peaked, scientists reported earlier this week.

A surge of coal, oil and natural gas consumption in China was the single largest cause of the increase, they said.

India has also stepped up its action, the CAT researchers said. Projected emissions in 2030 are about 20 percent less now than they were only a year ago, they reported.

"It is clear who the leaders are here: in the face of US inaction, China and India are stepping up," said Bill Hare, a scientist at Climate Analytics, a non-profit research organisation in Berlin.

Nonsense. The same "scientists" who cannot tell us if it will rain tomorrow (it IS today) want us to believe they know what will happen in a century. Poppycock.

Nov 15, 2017
The same "scientists" who get ALL their grant money from Globalist organizations, the Military-Industrial Complex, and pharmaceutical companies want us to believe they are impartial. What a joke. It was warmer during Roman times and the Middle Ages than it is now. Explain that, "scientists". You are nothing but sellouts to the NWO.

This is excellent. More articles like this will serve to confirm what we have long thought:
The GloBull Warming movement is a leftist political scheme amounting to class warfare
against the lower and middle class by the rich effetes.

It has done more damage to the field of science than any "Deniers" could ever do.

I am still waiting to hear how Global Warming/Climate Change Theory qualifies as a theory, never mind science. A theory must by definition withstand rigorous scientific challenge and scrutiny, much as Einstein's Theory of Relativity has for nearly a hundred years. Yet even today Einstein's seminal theory never became an incontrovertible Law of Physics like gravity or the Table of Elements, and is in fact under challenge based on new scientific discoveries.

By contrast, AGW/CC is populist pseudo-science driven by religious-like zeal by its adherents and hunger for political and financial gain by its major proponents. Its so-called science withers under challenge or scrutiny. Not a single dire prediction has come true. AGW/CC scientists have been caught manipulating data to reach preconceived outcomes, which is the exact opposite of the scientific process. Yet I am a criminal for pointing all this out? LOL! I'm with Trump on this. Ironically, he is the reasonable one here.

No matter what, the pseudo-science bullsh*t will continue. When you can predict tomorrow's weather to 100% accuracy, I may lend an ear.

Oh . . . jeez . . . we believe anything the UN sez . . . they would never lie to us . . . they would never prioritize $$$ ahead of ethics. They're lookin out for us (Uh huh).

Even some of those who support the Climate Change Paris Accord have admitted that the accord will not do anything to help with global warming. It is simply a wealth transfer from America to Globalists and it unfairly requires more from America than it does China and India. Its a fraud like much of the so called man made climate change movement.

Nov 15, 2017
So Trump pulls out of the Paris accords and they immediately see an impact on the weather. Oh, brother. Why are people so crazy now days? Does it mean we are really in the last days. Maybe so.

Political Science Fiction

Nov 15, 2017
Why this "settle science" is political, not science - They only cite the supply side, not the demand side of CO2 (Plant food), They only talk about the affects on temperature from CO2 raise, never the affects on agriculture (Every greenhouse operator knows increased CO2 = increased crop yield.) Most importantly, the Earth can only sustain 2 billion people without burning fossil fuel, so what are they going to do with the 5 - 6 billion corps ? John Deer doesn't run on batteries. Now, they have discovered 91 NEW volcanos under the ice in Antartica melting the ice.

Nov 15, 2017
Liberal fascist tyrant imbeciles. They must have missed the memo that we are heading for a massive global cooling period (read: slowly entering another ice age which happens about every 100,000 years and takes 10,000 years to melt and recover from - and yes, the last recovery was about 10,000 years ago). We're going to need all the man-made global warming as possible if we want to keep ourselves fed.

Nov 15, 2017
Oh my God! These idiots are telling us that President Trump is more powerful than the sun.

Nov 15, 2017
Do any of the above breathe through their nose?

Nov 15, 2017
The leftists will never let go of this global warming scam, because it enables a worldwide redistribution of wealth and power FROM America TO anyone else.
Facts and data are irrelevant to their cause. The only way to fight them is to convince any observers (because you won't convince the leftist wacko to whom you're speaking) that it's immoral to take the steps they require, which essentially would push us back to the Stone Age in terms of technology and economics. The hard-core global warming alarmists are aware of this, and are therefore immoral people, on this issue.

Nov 15, 2017
Money, money, money! Show them the money! The more you pay, the more the Earth will cool. Get it. Parasites need to live as well as the producers, or the parasites will starve.

Nov 15, 2017
The Globe Warms, The Globe cools.

Man has ZERO ability to impact this.

The number of people on the earth has continually increased, therefore, more bags of warm water walking around.

Nov 15, 2017
This man made global warming scam is simply a reason to redistribute money from the West to other parts of the world. The unfortunate facts are that the "world" is a cesspool of corruption that will use the money from the West to further enrich whomever is in power at any given time. Take Haiti, for example. I spend a lot of time in the Dominican Republic, speak Spanish, and support kids there. I have often asked why Haiti, with all the aid going there over the last 30 years has yet to develop a decent sanitation and water supply system. We are not talking a Haitian space program here, just decent water and sanitation, technology a hundred years old. The answer is simple: corruption and lack of interest. There are a lot of jobs involved in helping Haiti, but no results. There will be a lot of jobs In global warming, but the Earth will do what it wants.

The photo itself ought to put in doubt the veracity of the article. What I see is water vapor coming from cooling towers and steam. Shot from underneath the storm clouds near by, the photographer used the dark clouds to make it appear as the vapor and steam coming from the structures had turned dark (pollution) and turned the sky dark. And the photographer knows that pictures often provoke strong emotions. Just another con job. Fffffffake news.

We can't pull out of an accord we were never in. US participation in treaties requires ratification by the US Senate. The only guy 'in' this theory is Obama. Does anyone know where he is right now?

Meanwhile added CO2 is one part in Ten Thousand of the atmosphere, or 1 cent out of a hundred dollars. It is a physical impossibility for that much gas to heat the rest of the gas in the atmosphere to any measurable degree. It's like trying to steer your sailboat using flea farts. Not going to happen.

Wow - glad you settled that debate Brad - I mean thousands of scientists across the world - all agree that it is happening - so sure glad you know better than they do.

One quick question - take a look at the second graphic on this article - and maybe you can tell us what is causing the sudden temperature increase. http://blogs.edf....cause-3/

It's amazing. I've been staring at them for five minutes totally gobsmacked at how transparent they all are. Not to mention that none of them make any points about a) science or b) the article. I think they managed to hit every denier point in existence in only two or three hours. Surely that's some kind of record or something.

I will comment that this
"But if the US abandons its goals for reducing greenhouse gases, set under the Barack Obama administration, the end-of-century thermometer will climb even further to 3.2 C..."

is a wildly optimistic statement. Based on current emissions, if we get to 2050 under 3 degrees I'll be very surprised. Unless something radical happens, we'll be 2 degrees by 2030 and then we are truly fucked.

Yet another anonymous tidal wave of oil industry propaganda by the first posters above. This really shows an ugly side of humanity, i.e., the willingness to sacrifice everyone else for a piece of the oil profits. Of course the Republicans are some of the biggest pigs at the oil industry trough.

I keep wondering if the human race survives long enough to explore interstellar space (which is in very serious doubt) how many self-destructed civilizations we will find out there? Are we the rare screw-up that nearly destroyed ourselves several times over, or is technological advancement one of the biggest evolutionary bottlenecks for most civilizations and at least a partial answer to the Fermi Paradox?
