Dark matter guides growth of supermassive black holes

Every massive galaxy has a black hole at its center, and the heftier the galaxy, the bigger its black hole. But why are the two related? After all, the black hole is millions of times smaller and less massive than its home galaxy.

A new study of football-shaped collections of stars called elliptical provides new insights into the connection between a galaxy and its black hole. It finds that the invisible hand of dark matter somehow influences black hole growth.

"There seems to be a mysterious link between the amount of dark matter a galaxy holds and the size of its central black hole, even though the two operate on vastly different scales," says lead author Akos Bogdan of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).

This new research was designed to address a controversy in the field. Previous observations had found a relationship between the mass of the central black hole and the total mass of stars in elliptical galaxies. However, more recent studies have suggested a tight correlation between the masses of the black hole and the galaxy's dark matter halo. It wasn't clear which relationship dominated.

In our universe, dark matter outweighs normal matter - the everyday stuff we see all around us - by a factor of 6 to 1. We know dark matter exists only from its gravitational effects. It holds together galaxies and galaxy clusters. Every galaxy is surrounded by a halo of dark matter that weighs as much as a trillion suns and extends for hundreds of thousands of light-years.

To investigate the link between and supermassive , Bogdan and his colleague Andy Goulding (Princeton University) studied more than 3,000 elliptical galaxies. They used star motions as a tracer to weigh the galaxies' central black holes. X-ray measurements of hot gas surrounding the galaxies helped weigh the dark matter halo, because the more dark matter a galaxy has, the more hot gas it can hold onto.

They found a distinct relationship between the mass of the dark matter halo and the black hole mass - a relationship stronger than that between a black hole and the galaxy's stars alone.

This connection is likely to be related to how elliptical galaxies grow. An elliptical galaxy is formed when smaller galaxies merge, their stars and dark matter mingling and mixing together. Because the outweighs everything else, it molds the newly formed and guides the growth of the central black hole.

"In effect, the act of merging creates a gravitational blueprint that the galaxy, the stars and the black hole will follow in order to build themselves," explains Bogdan.

The paper describing this work has been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. This result relied on data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the ROSAT X-ray satellite's all-sky survey.

I agree with you completely. I would rather have no theory than bad theory. We need to think in strange ways to figure this one out, but most importantly, we need to keep an open mind. Things do not have to make sense to exist! Why do they assume they can calculate the gravity of a supermassive black hole? Could it not have some other type of gravity that we don't understand yet? It does cause a galaxy to rotate at a constant rate. Does not that violate our current understanding of gravity?

To start with I think we are underestimating the mass of the central black hole. The matter in our galaxy was at one time simply flying through space until it got caught in the gravity of the black hole. Some of that matter collided and became part of the SMBH, the rest started to settle into it's orbit. As those orbits settled down, matter was collecting into stars and planets, yet all was being held in orbit by the mass of the SMBH. The speed of the orbiting matter and the strength of the black hole gives the size of the orbits, thereby the size of the galaxy.

the relationship between the black hole at the center of the galaxy and dark matter might be this:
the black hole "engulfing" baryonic matter emits gravitational waves.
as a result the vacuum energy is "disturbed" and virtual particles are extracted and appear in our universe, but are not detectable by our instruments, but the gravity still increases, and the effect "cohesive" in the rotation of the galaxy is perceptible ..

You don't even know what Dark Matter is.

You're taking a calculated flaw and assuming it's "matter".

Systemic Error can have a strong correlation to an input as well.

Hey, what do you know, "Dark Matter" is systemic error. It fixes everything when you assume that all errors are "Dark Matter" or "Dark Energy".

I hear They have observed the formation of Unicorn Horns. More specifically, the ringlike properties accompanying growth of said horns seem to be due to pixies circumnavigating the foreheads of normal horses, shedding "magic dust" leads to the growths which transform the ordinary into extraordinary. Further research is needed to determine the chemical process involved in the formation of pixie dust.

1) If it's got that much matter it should have a lot of gravity. So why doesn't it more or less flow right to the black hole?

2) if it's got that much matter meaning gravity why doesn't it pull the galaxies apart?

or

3) Are all the stars in the galaxy balanced between the black hole's gravity and the dark matter's gravity?

There is evidence of dark matter every time a double slit experiment is performed; it's what waves.

Dark matter has mass. Dark matter physically occupies three dimensional space. Dark matter is physically displaced by the particles of matter which exist in it and move through it.

The Milky Way's halo is not a clump of dark matter anchored to the Milky Way. The Milky Way is moving through and displacing the dark matter.

The Milky Way's halo is the state of displacement of the dark matter.

The Milky Way's halo is the deformation of spacetime.

What is referred to geometrically as the deformation of spacetime physically exists in nature as the state of displacement of the dark matter.

A moving particle has an associated dark matter displacement wave. In a double slit experiment the particle travels through a single slit and the associated wave in the dark matter passes through both.

"Every galaxy is surrounded by a halo of dark matter that weighs as much as a trillion suns and extends for hundreds of thousands of light-years."

I think most people have trouble understanding this.

So the "Halo" is the size of a basketball, the Galaxy is the size of a marble.

Take a look at some high res pictures of the Boomerang Nebula, the "visible" "Halo" is on the right hand side, is curved and runs from the top middle the picture to the bottom middle. (You can't see the whole "halo" in this picture (or any picture I've seen))

The galaxy/nebula core looks like a tiny little spark in comparison, the only reason you can see the "halo" is because of the turbulence affecting the nebula gases, and the temperature.

http://upload.wik...bula.jpg

PS: I think in most nebula/galaxy formations there is at least two Halos, and as many as 3.

Thanks... helped explain that a lot.

This is a very tenuous theory, to say the least. The existence of dark matter hasn't been confirmed either experimentally or observationally. A further problem for this theory is that the existence of "black holes" hasn't been confirmed either. Having one unproven theory as the explanation for another unproven theory is hardly science. The entire field of cosmology is getting ready to be dumped on it'd head.
The findings of Halton Arp showing unequivocally that red shift is related to age not distance will invalidate the "standard model" of cosmology. New data from Chandra and other xray/gamma ray telescopes is confirming his observations despite staunch resistance from the "establishment". Their resistance is understandable, self -preservation is a strong motivator. Arp will go down as a modern day Galileo.
The electromagnetic model of the universe will emerge as it has experimental proof based on observations. Cause and effect can be clearly demonstrated.

You refer to "dark matter" as if it is a proven fact. It is not. EM is however a proven scientific fact. The problem with the mathematical solutions is that they do not show cause and effect. They should be used as a tool to confirm observations, not to produce an unobserved reality.

Yes, I've already proven repeatedly that most of the Dark Matter phenomenon is caused by inaccuracy of computer models due to the inability of running Newton's Laws as a correct n-body equation.

Fact:

The Gravitational Field of an N-body is larger than the gravitational field of a single particle with the same mass located at the N-body's barycenter.

Galaxies are not uniform spheres, not even ellipticals.

A spherical halo of Dark Matter is evidence that the scientists do not understand the mathematics, because a spherical halo is horribly inefficient at producing the results they claim need to be added anyway, which causes each successive "shell" of the halo to need more matter than the first. This is an incorrect view.

Even if there were Dark Matter, the most efficient place to hypothesis it's existence is still in the same disk as the ordinary matter.

I've done modelling in graph paper of systems of increasingly many points, simulating mass partitions of a galaxy, and the more points you add, the more wrong the assumption of a single point mass becomes for any position in the "galaxy".

I've done the calculations of Vector Sums for as many as 51 mass partitions by hand and always the curve is above the "predicted" curve found on Wikipedia, and the more points you add the closer it gets to the observed curve, and of course I know why: The inverse Squared law.

Ordinary matter on outside shells actually masks ORDINARY matter on inside shells, and the inverse squared law causes the velocity curve (and acceleration curve) to flatten out. This is a assuming an Disk of matter.

the effect can be observed using only particles along x/y axis, but continues to grow when you add particles along x/y diagonals, and would continue to grow if you added a small z axis too.

There is also an effect similar to the "infinite plate" phenomenon, whereby moving away from a plate maintains a steady attraction for a while. This is caused by trigonometric laws, as the angle of incidence of gravity in the vector sums changes the net attraction in the vector parallel to that pointing directly to the center stays about the same through a short zone, even though distance changes. This also serves to produce a "flattening" in the velocity/acceleration curve.

the effect is already noticable with 20-30 points, and the more points you add (let's say simulating more width in the disk) the more the entire curve flattens out and stays approximately the same from 40 to 50 points.

I had the central point represent the "hub" and have like 10 times the mass of each other partition, but you can simulate a more massive hub or less massive hub, it doesn't matter, because you could argue that the first ring or two of other partitions are also part of the hub.

Fact:

The Kelvin-helmowitz equation shows that the mass of two particles is greater than the mass of a single particle with the same..."proper mass"...

Why this paradox?

The "Potential energy" exists in the form of mass "somewhere in the system".

As the two particles approach one another, they gain kinetic energy and heat, but then they radiate this heat away (energy = masstimes csquared) as light, which means the combined particle is less massive.

This is a second reason that a single particle has less gravity than two particles with the same "proper mass".

In fact, Einstein's notion of relative mass is flawed, because conservation laws require the energy in the relative mass to already be in the system as "potential energy" (chemical bonds, gravity potential, electric/magnetic potential, nuclear potential, etc). So you would not gain infinite mass from a rocket ship. No more than the bond potential of fuel could go into "relative" mass.

Planetary Clock Contradiction:

I had this right all along.

You can prove that Einstein's original thought experiment is invalid. He incorrectly has the train on an imaginary infinite track.

In the real world, it would be on the surface of the Earth, and the "planetary clock", the "Calendar," (Sun, Earth, Moon,) runs the same for both observers.

When the twin on the train gets back he will have observed the Earth spin the exact same number of times as the other twin. The year, day, hour, minute, and seconds will be the same for both twins, both on a Solar calendar and a lunar calendar.

Einstein's assumption is incorrectly too abstracted, and no such scenario exists in the real universe, nor can it exist in the real universe.

This proves that no time dilation occurs because there is an absolute "clock" beyond the observers' control in the matter in the surrounding universe, which runs exactly the same in both reference frames.
Returners
1 / 5 (7) Feb 19, 2015
The "time dilation" measured by atomic clocks is being caused by some other phenomenon, and even though it somewhat appears to be like Einstein's formula, it is not caused by some "actual" motion-relative time: There is something changing the way the clocks run (less friction or something like that,) and not the passage of time itself.
Returners

A time change from traveling in a train or rocket can't just magically happen. It has to conserve forces (for every force there is an equal and opposite force). So if your actions (accelerating) is supposedly changing the passage of time, then it also has to change to kinetic energy and modify the momentum of all objects in the universe in such a way as to be consistent with the alleged observations, but nevertheless conserve total energy and momentum (allegedly).

If time itself were being modified for observers in the train, then the planetary clock contradiction would require the moving twin's train to exert energies and forces on the entire universe to explain why the universe itself appears to run differently...

However that still would not be consistent, becuase if one twin sees the Earths rotation and orbit slow down, the other twin is standing on the same Earth, and they'll still both see the same thing, and the Earth will orbit same number of times, etc

Fact:
There is a time-keeping reference which is the same for both observers, and this would be true for any two observers anywhere in the universe. Just observe the orbits of the nearest star system. Time does not magically pass slower for you just because you move faster, as that would require nonsense such as your train engine altering the mass and velocity of the entire universe just because you are moving, which is absurd and has no mediating particle, network, field, or force to explain that.

Fact:
The moving twin doesn't magically stay younger just because he was moving, and the train uses the same amount of fuel for both observers, which means time passed the same for both observers. The fuel tank serves as an objective clock due to conservation laws.

Fact:
The four vector should be treated as ordinary Pythagorean.

And I know the college material better than the instructors in most cases.

Apply at the Dollar Store for God's sake, and I can't pass their faulty reasoning personality test that has questions where none of the answers logically follow from the situation...

That's what I'm dealing with.

I can't get hired at a GARBAGE JOB FOR HIGHSCHOOL DROPOUTS because of stupid shit THIS GOD FORSAKEN CIVILIZATION rigged against me for reasons that make no sense whatsoever.

they do financial backgrounds (credit reports) well of course I have bad credit because I haven't been employed in forever, so what do you know?

I can't get a job because I have bad credit, but you need a job in order to not have bad credit.

It's hopeless vicious cycle intentionally rigged to fuck people over and keep them screwed up for life.

I need like 10 thousand dollars worth of dental work because my teeth are rotting out and I don't have anywhere near enough money to do so much as one of them, and I have $70 in my bank account for the rest of the month, because I spent something on myself for the first time in 3 months.

I need between 3 and 6 rootcanals and crowns done right away, and several fillings, and I need braces to fix my teeth so I don't look like something from a horror movie when I smile, because my family was poor and never took me to the dentist, and I've never gotten ahead enough in life to get it done myself.

I'm tired of having a president of the United States and a Congress that absolutely suck at their jobs, and I have more military strategy in my left pinky than the entire Joint Chiefs combined, and bald faced LIE about the nature of what is probably the most important moral and philosophical issues you can even talk about, and they ruined the lives of 40,000 American young men and women with physical war injuries, not counting the emotional shit, to have a GOAL WHICH WAS WRONG MINDED IN THE FIRST PLACE BECAUSE THEY WON'T ADMIT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, BECAUSE OUR CONSTITUTION FORBIDS YOU TO ADMIT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.

they give jobs and free training and guaranteed placement to convicts: Drug addicts and gang members, rapists, and honest people who've never broken a law beyond speeding due lapse of concentration can't get a job doing anything.

THATS THE FUCKED UP CIVILIZATION I LIVE IN.

And they take in millions and millions of immigrants both legal and illegal and give them free jobs training and free language training and free guaranteed or nearly guaranteed jobs placement, and don't hire people who have been here all their lives and loved this country....used to love it anyway, now I don't know what to think of it.

Still have 30 million unemployed, not counting under-employed, and OBAMA wants to give amnesty to the illegals, and open the boarders even more.

He's an incarnation of anti-christ, and I'm not saying that as an alarmist. I'm telling you what he is based on pure scriptural characteristics.

Obama meets the definition of the anti-christ.

He is deliberately destroying our culture and our jobs market.

He is deliberately making our country look like FOOLS in the eyes of the world community.

Bush was at fault too. They should have taken reprisal in IRAQ, instead they spent 6 trillion dollars on a war.

They spent 6 trillion dollars on a war with some scrubs living in caves, and on re-building IRAQ when they didn't rebuild our own shit: dams, levees, roads, bridges, energy infrastructure, jobs placement and training, etc...devalued our currency to the point that the debt is self-reinforcing at this point, simply because the currency has become self-devaluing.

You are supposed to get a reprisal when you get attack by other nations for no reason and you have to go clean up everyone else's mess and baby-sit half the world community every 5 or 10 years, but our dumbass government keeps giving away TRILLIONS of dollars worth of services, and sacrificing human lives for SHITTY, UNEDUCATED, UNINFORMED STRATEGIES THAT A FIVE YEAR OLD CHILD OF A NEWS COMMENTATOR IS SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW IS WRONG.

"WE'RE FUCKED. GIVE TERRORIST JOBS TRAINING."-OBAMANATION.

"WHY DON'T WE JUST KILL THEM?"-FIVE YEAR OLD CHILD.

NOT MY FAULT FRIEND.

Video showing my aptitude score.

https://www.youtu...L6J9Ti8Q

I will upload and add the one showing the written record of my I.Q. score of 134, though I've scored as high as 144 before I think I missed the last question this time, or maybe the last two, I don't know.

Is anyone going to face me now, you hypocrites?

I proved I've been robbed by this piece of junk civilization I live in.

Nobody gave me a chance, year after year, and they ruined my life. they stole the best years of my life that I'm supposed to be married and having a family and paying for a home of my own and stuff, and nobody gave me a chance, and they give all the jobs to criminals and illegals and foreigners who want to see us dead.

BUT
you have not been able to produce any results that prove ANYTHING

just like your historical posts here on PO
all BS rant and no substance
This isn't my fault.
I can show you the test results from my aptitude scores

@WADE
you forgot to post your social security number so that we can verify and validate your video as legitimate

too bad youtube and PO don't have an EMO category or a Woe is ME whiner category, eh?

there might be a solution to your problem:
perhaps you could take grammar and enunciation lessons
then get an education and be sensible enough not to call everyone else stupid because you got a good test score once

(PS I blew your test out of the water)

you really should think more than once before linking such personal stuff

Quit taking in Islamic immigrants, and if the Constitution forbids that, then by God AMEND THE CONSTITUTION TO BAN ISLAM and ISLAMIC IMMIGRANTS.

IF THE CONSTITUTION REQUIRES WE TREAT ALL RELIGIONS EQUALLY, THEN THE CONSTITUTION IS WRONG AND NEEDS TO BE AMENDED.

MY LIFE HAS LITERALLY BEEN IN A DOWNWARD SPIRAL EVER SINCE 911, AS IF IT WASN'T ALREADY PRETTY FLAT, AND SINCE 2005 ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAS GONE POSITIVELY FOR ME IN TERMS OF JOB OPPORTUNITITES OR RELATIONSHIPS OR PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING THAT HUMANS DO FOR JOY OR PEACE OR FINANCES OR RELATIONSHIPS OR DAILY LIVING....OBVIOUSLY, BECAUSE YOU CAN'T DO ANY OF THOSE THINGS IN THIS CIVILIZATION IF YOU DON'T HAVE MONEY ANYWAY. I'M JUST A FUCKING PILE OF FLESH THAT NOBODY GIVES A DAMN ABOUT, BECAUSE NOBODY ELSE WILL GIVE ME A JOB OPPORTUNITY SO I CAN DO ANYTHING PRODUCTIVE WITH MYSELF AND EARN A LIVING AND FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

PISS ON OBAMA, AND PISS ON MUSLIMS, ILLEGALS, AND CRIMINALS TOO.

I'VE TRIED THAT YOU DUMB FUCK. THAT'S THE PROBLEM. I'VE ALREADY DONE THAT FOR YEARS ON END.

WHAT PART OF "I'VE ALREADY DONE THAT" DIDN'T YOU UNDERSTAND?

AT ONE TIME i APPLIED TO 20 JOBS PER DAY AND GOT LIKE 3 RESPONSES AND 2 OF THOSE WERE DEAD ENDS, AND GOT A THIRD INTERVIEW AND NO RETURN CALL ON THE OTHER ONE.

THAT'S THE STORY OF MY LIFE.

I'M TIRED OF SECOND AND THIRD INTERVIEWS AND NO RETURN CALL FROM EMPLOYERS.

I'M SICK OF THAT.

IT'S INHUMAN WHAT HAS BEEN DONE TO ME.

IT'S ABSOLUTELY INHUMAN. I'M TREATED LIKE AN ANIMAL.

FUCK THEY TREAT ANIMALS BETTER THAN ME.

I ASK THE STATE JOBS AGENCIES FOR HELP FINDING A JOB AND THE ONLY THING THEY DO IS TELL ME TO USE THE COMPUTER PROGRAM I ALREADY USE.

so now you are blaming it on the terrorists?

or are you going for the "its the government" in a grand conspiracy with that above rant?

so, all your problems you have now are because terrorists attacked NYC ?

Maybe if you move to Afghanistan or Iraq you can go explain your plight to ISIS and they fel sorry for you and help you out eh?
FUCK THEY TREAT ANIMALS BETTER THAN ME.
Maybe you can sue the gov't, state and the terrorists for you being a loser with no job and for the "woe is me" treatment?
i am sure there is a lawyer willing to take your money for that

No
but FB is a far better way to give personal rants and whine about how mistreated you are, play the pity party game, sulk in your pathetic circumstances and spread your "gossip" than a science site like PO
i really should move to china or something
that is a good idea
by all means, move to a country where they just LOVE stupidity, public displays against the gov't, irrelevant psycho rants and public displays of the above
you will get along great with them, i am sure
i think ISIS or some other Muslim country would be better though
nobody in the US understands me anyway, so it couldn't be much worse
and you actually think this is because you are so smart?
really?

if you're so smart and capable:
why aren't you working, owning your own company, living off of patents or copy-write royalties or something?

conspiracy again?

how many years am I supposed to be unemployed?

How many more job applications am I supposed to put in, and where? I don't know any more.

I've tried and tried and tried.

I'm tired of literally being a full time "job searcher" and not getting paid at least minimum wage to do it.

It's freaking ridiculous.

Do you know how depressing and inhuman it is to take that GOD DAMNED personality test at every job application you go to?

I'm tired of being judged as "failure" by people, and society itself, because nobody hired me repeatedly year after year.

Here, you think I'm lying. Put it where your mouth is.

If blaming everyone else for not recognizing your genius and so causing all your problems, is not working out so well,.... then try investing your self professed critical thinking ability into attempting an alternative tactic: .... Try the opposite, humble yourself and assume others are at least as good as you, .....and for every problem you encounter in life, blame only YOURSELF, irrespective of your instincts. This forces you to reflect analytically on your own behavior and decision making which may have ultimately lead to your problems. Stop being dishonest with yourself. Regard it as unacceptable to be a perpetual victim, not as a convenient crutch.

As mentioned above you should seek help from a professional that is not just telling you what you want to hear.

Good luck to you.

Returners, I'm not having a go at you mate, but really, remove that personal information. There are too many onliners nutters that might abuse that kind of info.

I think you need to try and calm down a bit. Anger won't help you. You might be at the bottom of the ladder right now, so focus on the positives, look up and see where you need to go, and work on a plan to get there. Time, energy and focus :-))

Good luck.

P.S. perhaps take a break from posting on here. Too many people here are ready to throw shit at people from behind the comfort of their keyboard.

@DavidW, no need to invoke God, especially on a Science site. It's perfectly possible to lift Returners spirit without invoking God, or trying to recruit someone when they are down. Keep your spiritual beliefs to yourself DavidW, as each persons beliefs are nothing more than there own. Science on the other hand is common to all whether alive or not.
