1,700 UK scientists back climate science

December 10, 2009 By RAPHAEL G. SATTER , Associated Press Writer

(AP) -- Fighting back against climate skeptics, over 1,700 scientists in Britain have signed a statement defending the evidence that climate change is being caused by humans, Britain's weather office said Thursday.

It was the latest attempt to remind the world of the reality of global warming after a cache of leaked e-mails was seized upon by skeptics as proof of a scientific conspiracy to stifle or twist the data on change.

"We, members of the U.K. science community, have the utmost confidence in the observational evidence for global warming and the scientific basis for concluding that it is due primarily to human activities. The evidence and the science are deep and extensive," the statement posted to the Met Office Web site said.

"They come from decades of painstaking and meticulous research, by many thousands of scientists across the world who adhere to the highest levels of professional integrity."

E-mails stolen from the University of East Anglia and released to the Internet last month appeared to show top climate scientists discussing ways to shield data from public scrutiny and suppress others' work. Climate skeptics - those who deny that human activity is responsible for global warming - have seized on the correspondence as evidence that scientists have conspired to hide the facts.

Top officials in Britain and at the U.N. have acknowledged that the incident has damaged of the science but say the facts are solid. Scientists have also been dismayed by the reaction to the e-mails, and several groups - including the American Association for the Advancement of Science - have released statements in support of the evidence behind man-made global warming.

Of the more than 1,700 signatories behind Thursday's statement, a Met Office spokeswoman said "a significant majority work directly in the climate science field." However she said she could not provide a detailed breakdown.

The spokeswoman said those scientists who didn't work directly in the climate science field were familiar with the impact of on their respective disciplines. She spoke anonymously in line with department policy.

Here's the list:

I haven't analysed who or what the credentials are and honestly I don't think it's going to end up being worth anyone's time as people are already saying they were coerced.

Take the source as you will, but the scientist's name is in the article.

Edit: my apologies, the scientist's name is not in the article, feel free to disregard the statement of coersion as Fox can't be seen as a credible source on its own.

Genuine Or Coerced?

"We, members of the U.K. science community, have the utmost confidence in the observational evidence for global warming and the scientific basis for concluding that it is due primarily to human activities. The evidence and the science are deep and extensive"

What about clear evidence of data manipulation and deceit?

With kind regards,

Olivier - I find it interesting that you claim scientific credentials yet find 'clear evidence' of deceit from a few emails taken out of context. Yet somehow, thousands and thousands of well researched studies from almost every field indicating that global warming is real are dismissed and discarded as evidence of anything important.

From the extreme bias you show in looking at the data, I find it much more likely that you are a paid shill of the fossil fuels industry.

There is a lot of evidence that the fossil fuel industry is the source of most of the incredibly dubious science purported as truth by AGW deniers. A LOT more evidence than the cherry picked, out-of-context emails hacked from a few computers.

You deniers are being led by cynical and shameless industry hacks to keep governments from taking actions that will harm fossil industry profits.

Scientists are mostly underpaid and understaffed and can hardly expect any return from their work no matter what they report. Average university salaries are much less than industry salaries. If they wanted to go for the money they wouldn't be working anywhere where their research would be published (most of them).

Follow the money. Who stands to profit the most from government paralysis and inaction over global warming? That's the real scandal here. Trillions of dollars in profits from continuing to rely on fossil fuels.

You guys are being fed a line of bull fecal reside a mile high. Any you just eat it up like it was candy.

Warmists are concentrating on the E-mails to draw attention from the thousands of documents, data, internal memos and faulty computing programing also released.
IT experts examining the theory of a "hack" have come to the conclusion that it would be impossible to collate so much specific material from multiple computers in an acceptable time frame.
It seems more likely that the material was collected internally to one server ready to delete in order to avoid releasing it in a FOI demand. All a whistleblower would have to do was point someone to the file which was on a publically accessable server.
Hoist by their own petard.

Parsec, the UN has received more in funding from the fossil fuel industries than most other outfits. Dr. Pauchari has personally received grants and funding from FF lobbies in the past as well.
