Samsung Electronics is exhibiting two of its leading display products, as well as a few highly promising concept prototypes at the 45th annual Society for Display (SID) 2007 exhibition (Long Beach, CA, May 22-24).

Samsung is exhibiting the 40” LCD TV with LED backlight that has been awarded this year’s SID Gold Award for Display of the Year. The 40-inch LED-backlit display delivers a contrast ratio of 10,000:1, which is five times higher than that of LCD panels with a CCFL backlight. Color saturation is also 105% of the NTSC standard. These improvements are helping to put LCD TVs with an LED backlight into the market mainstream, and the award recognizes this fact.

In a show of quality advancements, the largest LCD TV panel for mass production is also being demonstrated at the exhibition. Featuring proprietary 120Hz McFiTM (motion-compensated frame interpolation) technology, the new 70” LCD display refreshes motion picture images at twice the speed of conventional 60Hz models. This doubles the number of frames per second, making moving images crystal clear.

Sure to garner a great deal of interest, Samsung also is exhibiting the world’s largest (A4-sized/14.3-inch diagonal) color “electronic paper” (e-paper), a plastic, flexible display that can deliver undistorted color images even when the surface is bent. It also continues to show a static image after power has been shut off. For this “concept” model, the company used 130°C low-temperature amorphous (non-crystalline) silicon processing to prevent distortion of the plastic substrate.

In addition, the company also is unveiling the world’s largest (40 inch) black-and-white e-paper at the exhibition. The display is an EPD (electrophoretic display) that can be used for creating extra-large digital information displays (DIDs), with HD resolution (1,366 X 768 pixels), It consumes very little power: 300mW at one frame per minute, which is 1/500 that of a conventional LCD display.

Samsung Electronics booth at the SID exhibit hall is highlighting LCD TV image quality and the latest technology improvements to LCD TVs, including LED backlights, rich color saturation, natural deep-black reproduction and very high contrast ratios.

Other noteworthy products being exhibited at this year’s SID include a 24” LCD monitor panel with LED backlight, with room for two A4 pages side to side and two more inches for the Windows Vista sidebar panel. The company is also exhibiting a double-sided 2.22” LCD panel for mobile phones.
