In the space travel age, photonic tech is the way to go

July 27th, 2016

As the space travel age dawns upon us, photonic technology takes on a greater central role in its impact on the performance of space systems.

As an emerging and crucial enabling technology, photonics has the potential of enhancing many space systems, including the links for on-board data handling, the high-resolution measurement systems, and the processing units.

World Scientific's latest book "Photonics in Space" discusses the topic with a special emphasis on the new guided-wave devices with high performance, low cost and size.

For instance, the book's contents deal with the fundamentals of optoelectronics and photonics, optical interconnects for spacecraft, satellite optical communication links, optical signal processors; photonic sensing systems and solar cells.

Edited by Caterina Ciminelli (Politecnico di Bari, Italy), Francesco Dell'Olio (Politecnico di Bari, Italy), Mario Nicola Armenise (Politecnico di Bari, Italy), Photonics in Space retails for US$118/ £98 at major bookstores including Amazon, Barnes Noble, amongst others.
