IASLC to host 2015 World Conference on Lung Cancer in Denver

July 31st, 2015

The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) will host the 16th World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) Sept. 6-9, 2015 in Denver, Colo. The WCLC is the world's largest meeting dedicated to lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies, attracting more than 7,000 researchers, physicians and specialists from more than 100 countries. Bringing together many of the world's greatest minds, the conference goal is to increase awareness and collaboration so that the latest developments can be understood and implemented throughout the world. This year, for the first time, the conference will feature special educational programs for community practices, nurses and advocates.

"Thousands of experts representing dozens of specialties share a single goal: conquering the lung and thoracic cancers that account for nearly a third of all cancer deaths worldwide - more than breast, prostate and colon cancers combined," said Dr. Fred R. Hirsch, CEO of IASLC, Professor in Medicine and Pathology at the University of Colorado and Congress President. "Unprecedented collaboration and advanced science in medical research and treatment is critical to progress and success. IASLC is committed to guaranteeing that collaboration by creating engaging and rigorous conferences, timed to present leading discoveries in the fight against lung cancer."

The four-day conference will cover a wide range of disciplines including more than 300 invited talks and 3,000 formal research studies and clinical trial results shared in oral, mini oral and poster session. Falling under that overall theme of "Fighting Lung Cancer," the scientific abstracts have categorized into the following daily themes:

  • Lung Cancer Prevention and Screening
  • Lung Cancer: A Women's Disease
  • Science Drives Lung Cancer Advances

While the IASLC will make the majority of the abstracts available on Friday, Aug. 21, 2015 at 4 p.m. Pacific Time, the embargo for the findings of several key studies has been pushed until the conference. The authors of these abstracts will present them during the conference and offer more details during daily press conferences.

In addition to research, several events throughout the conference will facilitate the interaction between medical experts, advocates, patients and caregivers including:

  • Educational sessions
  • Exhibit showcase sessions
  • The Young Investigator's Session

IASLC designed these sessions specifically for medical professionals in training and those in the early stages of their career. Furthermore, for the first time, IASLC is including patients in the conference free of charge. Attendees at the 2015 WCLC include surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, pathologists, epidemiologists, basic research scientists, nurses, allied health professionals, advocates, caregivers and patients.

"From basic science to molecular targeted therapies, the array of scientific discovery that will be shared in Denver is remarkable," Dr. Hirsch added. "It is a great pleasure and an honor to extend a warm welcome to the 16th IASLC World Conference on Lung Cancer in beautiful Colorado."

General and Media registration is now open. For more information on the 2015 WCLC, visit: http://wclc2015.iaslc.org/.
