Weight loss is associated with improvements in histological features of NASH

April 23rd, 2015

New data presented today at The International Liver Congress 2015 show that the intensity of weight loss induced by lifestyle changes is strongly linked with the grade of improvement of various histological features of NASH. Weight loss of more than 7% results in a positive impact on most histological parameters; however, to induce steatohepatitis resolution, and fibrosis and portal inflammation improvements, over 10% weight loss is needed.

The study was conducted in 293 patients with histologically proven NASH. Patients were treated in clinical practice with a low-fat hypocaloric diet and increased physical activity for 52 weeks. A paired liver biopsy at 52 weeks was performed to determine a minimum two-point improvement in NAS (NAFLD Activity Score) or steatohepatitis resolution without fibrosis impairment; 261 patients underwent paired biopsies, which were blinded and centrally reviewed.
