Professor Federico Rosei receives prestigious honor as mentor

March 23rd, 2015

Professor Federico Rosei of INRS's Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre has been honoured by the American Vacuum Society (AVS, Science and Technology of Materials, Interfaces, and Processing) in recognition of his mentorship of young researchers. It is the first time a scientist working in Canada has received the AVS Excellence in Leadership Award.

"Science and its applications are powerful tools that enable us to address humanity's most pressing challenges. It is therefore crucial to encourage young people, regardless of where they come from, to pursue careers in science," says Professor Rosei, who is very honoured to be recognized for his mentoring efforts.

He has launched a number of training and mentoring initiatives, including the UNESCO Chair on Materials and Technologies for Energy Conversion, Saving and Storage (MATECSS). Professor Rosei holds the chair, which is a source of training for young scientists from developing countries. Over 100 young researchers from 30 countries around the world have benefitted from his scientific knowledge and supervision. He has also developed tools, such as intensive courses on scientific survival techniques, and written a book as a career guide for young researchers.

Professor Rosei is recognized as a world leader in nanomaterials and their applications in electronics and photonics and is considered a pioneer for his work on the physical and chemical properties of surfaces and interfaces. He is a prolific author whose works have earned him numerous awards and honours, and is a member of 14 academies and societies, including the Royal Society of Canada and the European Academy of Sciences. Professor Rosei has earned 12 major national and international awards, including the 2014 José Vasconcelos World Award of Education presented by the World Cultural Council, demonstrating the importance of his contribution to the training of the next generation of scientists.

"Invest in education and science and give opportunities to young people so that they can reach their true potential and help to make the world become a better place for everyone," adds the recipient of the AVS Excellence in Leadership Award.

Our sincere congratulations to Professor Rosei for his scientific commitment to the world's youth!
