Decoding Water: Physics Webcast to Explore Scarcity of Our Most Precious Resource

February 12th, 2015

To paraphrase Coleridge: "Water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink."

Water is a paradox – it covers most of our blue planet, and is a necessity to life, but is almost inaccessible to millions of people around the world.  How do we resolve the problem of water scarcity? Dr. Marcia Barbosa, director of the Physics Institute at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil,  believes  answers may lie in the peculiar physics of water.

On March 4, Barbosa will explore the dozens of "weird" physical properties of water, and how those properties may be the key to unlocking a safe, sustainable future with fresh water for all.

The free webcast, titled "Water Stress: Seeking Solutions in the Unusual Properties of Water," is part of the Perimeter Institute Public Lecture Series presented by Sun Life Financial.

"Water is the most beautiful solvent in nature," says Barbosa. "If we understand the physics of water, we can understand so much about nature as a whole."

Barbosa has been building a greater understanding of the unique physical properties of water for 15 years. For this important work, she was awarded the 2013 L'Oreal-UNESCO Prize for Women in Physics. Barbosa has also been recognized for her work in Gender Studies, receiving the Nicholson Medal from the American Physical Society in 2010. She is a member of the council of the American Physical Society and also a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.

Barbosa's public lecture will be webcast live on Wednesday March 4, 2015, at 7 pm EST. Online viewers can pose questions to Barbosa by tweeting to @Perimeter and using the hashtag #piLIVE. Click here to sign up to receive an email reminder about the live webcast.
