Ning Xiang awarded the Wallace Clement Sabine Medal of the Acoustical Society of America

Ning Xiang, Director of the Graduate Program in Architectural Acoustics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been awarded the Wallace Clement Sabine Medal by the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) for contributions to measurements and analysis techniques, and numerical simulation of sound fields in coupled rooms. The award was presented at the 168th meeting of the ASA on 29 October 2014 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Wallace Clement Sabine Medal is presented to an individual of any nationality who has furthered the knowledge of architectural acoustics, as evidenced by contributions to professional journals and periodicals or by other accomplishments in the field of architectural acoustics.

"I was simply overwhelmed and could not express my gratitude when I realized that such profound individuals as Vern Knudsen, Leo Beranek, Erwin Meyer, and Lothar Cremer were among the former recipients of the Sabine Medal!" said Xiang. "Receiving this highly respected medal is the most rewarding moment in my life and I am grateful to the Acoustical Society of America and to my advisor Prof. Jens Blauert. I am also very thankful to Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany for my advanced degree, and to TianJin University China, for my higher education. My thanks also go to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute which has granted me a permanent academic position to practice graduate education and to conduct research in Architectural Acoustics."

Ning Xiang began his career in 1984, arriving as a student from China at Ruhr-University in Bochum, Germany where he earned a Master's degree in 1986 and a Ph.D. in 1990. After the completion of his doctoral degree he held positions at HEAD acoustics and the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics in Germany and the National Center for Physical Acoustics in the US. In 2003, Xiang accepted an academic position at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. There he turned his full attention to architectural acoustics, focusing on good sound quality in performance spaces and other built environments. His research interests are in predicting/calculating the sound before a venue is built and measuring and analyzing sound in complex, interconnected spaces. He has also great passion of educating the next generation of architectural acousticians.

Ning is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and of the Institute of Acoustics (UK).
