5th IOF Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting opens in Taipei

November 14th, 2014

Today, researchers and clinicians from throughout the region have gathered in Taipei for the opening of the 5th Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting. The event, taking place from November 14 to 16, is one of the Asia-Pacific's most important bone, muscle and joint congresses. It has been organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) in cooperation with the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association (TOA).

Osteoporosis is often termed the 'silent disease' because there are no apparent symptoms until a patient suffers a broken bone - as a result the majority of people with osteoporosis often remain undiagnosed and untreated. Speaking at the opening of the Congress, Mr. Sun Yueh, an 84-year old Taiwanese retired actor and full-time volunteer who has been diagnosed with osteoporosis, recounted his personal story. Mr. Yueh reminded delegates that by ensuring the early diagnosis of osteoporosis and its appropriate management, they are helping their patients avoid a potential cascade of painful fractures and long-term disability.

Professor Rong-Sen Yang, co-chair of the Meeting, said, "The Scientific Programme Committee has planned an extraordinary programme which features both advances in clinical practice and the latest regional research in the field. Delegates will hear about many exciting new developments and will have the opportunity to meet leading researchers and clinicians from around the world."

Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association President, Prof. Fang-Ping Chen, stated, "With osteoporosis acknowledged as a serious and growing health problem in Asia, we are very pleased to join IOF in hosting this important meeting in Taipei. We believe that as a result of the high quality scientific programme, delegates will return home with valuable new knowledge and insights to help them to better prevent and treat osteoporotic fractures in their patients."
