Hispanic Physicists Society organizes under SURA sponsorship

Last month, representatives of the National Society of Hispanic Physicists and the Southeastern Universities Research Association met to formalize an affiliation agreement on terms of SURA's sponsorship to provide group tax exemption status to NSHP.

Attending the August 14 meeting were NSHP board members: Luz Martinez-Miranda, President; David Ernst, Past President; Ramon Lopez, Secretary; (and telephonically,) Juan Burciaga, Education Officer; and Raul Armedariz, Technical Officer.

Also participating was Elizabeth Lawson, SURA Chief Governance Officer and Corporate Secretary, who will now serve as the new NSHP Assistant Secretary and corporate liaison, providing guidance and assistance with governance matters. Additionally, David Ernst serves as the SURA-appointed director to the NSHP Board. The NSHP board meeting was held in Washington DC at SURA headquarters.

Lopez said, "This agreement marks a new beginning for NSHP to develop as a fully incorporated non-profit, to the benefit of our members and our mission."

SURA President & CEO Jerry P. Draayer added, "We are pleased to extend our group tax exemption coverage to the NSHP, as a way to also further SURA's mission. By promoting the professional well-being of Hispanic physicists, NSHP strengthens the scientific capabilities of the nation."

At this meeting, the final organization of the NSHP was concluded and the group became an incorporated 501(c)(3) organization under SURA's group tax exemption umbrella. Jesus Pando, NSHP Treasurer, who was unable to attend the meeting, led the negotiations with SURA leading to NSHP's incorporation.
