H.O.W. Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper Awards more than $40,000 through Fellowship

December 12th, 2013

H.O.W. Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper, a program of Palm Healthcare Foundation, recently awarded two Florida doctors with more than $40,000 through the Jacquie Liggett Fellowship, allowing continued funding in their areas of research and progression in the field of gynecologic oncology.

Dr. Nadim Bou Zgheib, Gynecologic Oncology Fellow at the University of South Florida, was awarded $24,750 for his work in researching the mutations within ovarian cancer cells. Dr. Zgheib is in his final year of gynecologic oncology fellowship training at Tampa General Hospital. This intensive year will consist of two-and-a-half days per week in the operating room, twice daily rounds on the hospital floor and an active role managing patients in the intensive care unit. Dr. Zgheib will also collaborate with prominent gynecologic oncologists from around the country at lectures and conferences throughout the year.

The Jacquie Liggett Fellowship will provide Dr. Zgheib with funding for clinical cancer research workshops, live robotics labs, a one-week observership at the Mayo Clinic, and additional tools to advance his research. This is the third year in a row that H.O.W. has selected Dr. Zgheib as a Jacquie Liggett Fellowship Grant recipient.

"The Jacquie Liggett Fellowship will allow Dr. Zgheib to improve his surgical skills and advance the care of patients with ovarian cancer," stated Dr. Hoffman, Director of Fellowship at University of South Florida and Dr. Zgheib's mentor.

Dr. Kendall Nettles, from the Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter, Florida, also received the Jacquie Liggett Fellowship and was awarded $20,000 for his work in targeting NF-kB via the estrogen receptor in ovarian cancer and tumor associated macrophages, and through his work in breast cancer research, he believes there is a link to possible causes of ovarian cancer. Dr. Nettles has a strong interest in nuclear receptor signaling, chemical biology as well as cancer research, and the receiving the Jacquie Liggett Fellowship will allow continued funding for his promising work.

"Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death in women with gynecological cancer and the fifth leading cancer death in women. Jacquie Liggett wanted to create an organization devoted to helping people with ovarian cancer, and H.O.W. continues to do amazing things for those in need," stated Dr. Robert Knapp, board member of H.O.W. Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper and the co-inventor of CA125, the blood test for ovarian cancer. Dr. Knapp is also the William H. Baker, Professor of Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology, Emeritus, at the Harvard Medical School and Visiting Scholar in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
