John Wesley Munz, M.D., assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School, has been presented a teaching award by an internationally recognized medical organization.

Munz was presented the Howard Rosen Table Instructor Award at a training workshop in Pittsburgh, Pa., organized by AOTrauma North America (AOTNA). The award was created in 2000 by the AOTNA Education Committee to commemorate Rosen's lifelong dedication to teaching. Rosen was also known for his use of a technique that allowed him to repair fractures without bulky casts.

Munz, one of the instructors at the workshop, was singled out by his peers who felt that his performance in the laboratory exemplified many of the same teaching skills and devotion attributed to Rosen. The instructors taught basic principles and techniques of operative fracture management to doctors from around the world.

Munz specializes in orthopaedic trauma care and trains orthopaedic surgery residents at the UTHealth Medical School. "We teach the residents day in and day out. The key to being a good orthopaedic surgeon includes being dedicated to patient care," he said.

Munz received his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University and his medical degree at the UTHealth Medical School. He completed a surgical internship and an orthopaedic surgery residency at the UTHealth Medical School, as well as a fellowship in orthopaedic trauma at Harborview Medical Center at the University of Washington.

Other UTHealth faculty members earning the award include Timothy Achor, M.D., assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery, and Milton L. "Chip" Routt Jr., M.D., professor of orthopaedic surgery.
