Sex offenders are on the move

Convicted sex offenders continue to move freely within communities, including in restricted areas, despite laws designed to limit their movements. A new study, by Alan Murray from Arizona State University and colleagues, uses new tracking techniques to better understand the actual movements of sex offenders. This information can help develop effective strategies to promote public safety. The findings are published in a new book, Crime Modeling and Mapping Using Geospatial Technologies, published by Springer.

New big data survey shows potential for business

For the first time ever, a total 1.8 zettabytes of data were generated worldwide last year – and according to forecasts, the volume will continue to double every two years. So, one key question we can ask today is: How can we utilize these mountains of data better? A survey by the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS is now shedding light on the topic of "big data". It reveals opportunities and challenges for business. To give companies some orientation concerning big data technologies and applications, the researchers develop an experimentation platform which will be shown at CeBIT fair 2013.

Toward a new model of the cell: Everything you always wanted to know about genes

Turning vast amounts of genomic data into meaningful information about the cell is the great challenge of bioinformatics, with major implications for human biology and medicine. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and colleagues have proposed a new method that creates a computational model of the cell from large networks of gene and protein interactions, discovering how genes and proteins connect to form higher-level cellular machinery.

Speeding algorithms by shrinking data

In computer science, the buzzword of the day is "big data." The proliferation of cheap, Internet-connected sensors—such as the GPS receivers, accelerometers and cameras in smartphones—has meant an explosion of information whose potential uses have barely begun to be explored. In large part, that's because processing all that data can be prohibitively time-consuming.

Researchers link Caribbean extinction of bats to rising sea levels

(Phys.org)—In a new study published in the journal Ecology and Evolution, researchers show that rising sea levels produced by deglaciation, or the melting of glaciers, caused the extinction of most bats in the Caribbean Islands, including the Cuban vampire and Puerto Rican flower bats. The article, entitled, "Deglaciation explains bat extinction in the Caribbean," led by Assistant Professor Liliana M. Dávalos, PhD, from the Department of Ecology and Evolution at Stony Brook University, shows that deglaciation drowned vast expanses of low-lying islands.
