Swedes bringing faster Internet to U.K.

Great Britain is expected to soon approve a new generation of broadband offered by a Swedish ISP that is capable of speeds of 24 Mbps.

Contractor UK said the green light was expected within a few weeks for the service, which will be initially offered by Be, a Swedish company that looks like it will beat out British companies such as Cable & Wireless and BT.

Be's ADSL2-plus service is a twin of Japan's vaunted VDSL service, which is about 480 times faster than dialup and particularly useful when working with music and film downloads.

The Contractor noted that similar upgrades by U.K. companies were still in the test stages and would not be ready for deployment until late in the year.
