MIT, Massachusetts Institute of Technology admitted its first student in 1865. MIT has five schools and one college. Currently MIT has expanded from its original charter in physical sciences and engineering to include economics, philosophy, linguistics, political science and management. MIT has more than 10,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate program. MIT is a preeminent institution for learning, research and boasts 73 Nobel Laureates, 47 Medal of Science recipients and 31 MacArthur Fellows who have been associated with the Institute. MIT is currently transforming its campus to green energy. International scholars from Asia, Europe, Canada and across the globe make MIT home for their independent research. Over 3,000 international students are in the undergraduate and graduate schools at MIT. Public access and media access is welcomed.
Researchers find a way of tuning light waves by pairing two exotic 2-D materials
Researchers have found a way to couple the properties of different two-dimensional materials to provide an exceptional degree of control over light waves. They say this has the potential to lead to new kinds of light detection, ...
Researcher charts quantum signatures of electronic transport in graphene
Over the last seven years, Javier Sanchez-Yamagishi has built several hundred nanoscale stacked graphene systems to study their electronic properties. "What interests me a lot is that the properties of this combined system ...
Working out in artificial gravity
Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) have a number of exercise options, including a mechanical bicycle bolted to the floor, a weightlifting machine strapped to the wall, and a strap-down treadmill. They spend ...
New techniques could help identify students at risk for dropping out of online courses
MOOCs—massive open online courses—grant huge numbers of people access to world-class educational resources, but they also suffer high rates of attrition.
Researchers explore mechanics of silk to design materials with high strength and low density
Spider silk has long been noted for its graceful structure, as well as its advanced material properties: Ounce for ounce, it is stronger than steel.
Probabilistic programming does in 50 lines of code what used to take thousands
Most recent advances in artificial intelligence—such as mobile apps that convert speech to text—are the result of machine learning, in which computers are turned loose on huge data sets to look for patterns.
New Horizons mission co-investigator on craft's closest view of Pluto
On Jan. 19, 2006, NASA launched a space probe the size of a golf cart on a mission to explore the farthest reaches of the solar system; its destination was the Kuiper Belt, a frigid region beyond the planets, populated with ...
Researchers build new fermion microscope
Fermions are the building blocks of matter, interacting in a multitude of permutations to give rise to the elements of the periodic table. Without fermions, the physical world would not exist.
Algorithm to distinguish reflections from photos taken through windows
It's hard to take a photo through a window without picking up reflections of the objects behind you. To solve that problem, professional photographers sometimes wrap their camera lenses in dark cloths affixed to windows by ...
Powering desalination with the sun
When graduate student Natasha Wright began her PhD program in mechanical engineering, she had no idea how to remove salt from groundwater to make it more palatable, nor had she ever been to India, where this is an ongoing ...
