Briefs: Comcast is No. 1, but SBC puts up fight

Comcast remains the biggest U.S. cable provider, but SBC has been growing rapidly in the latest quarter, a research group found Friday.

In a report entitled "U.S. broadband 3Q05 service provider analysis," Amy Harris of IDC said, "Comcast retained the number one slot, with more than 8.1 million broadband subscribers as of (the third quarter of this year). However, the real story this quarter was SBC's phenomenal growth, with the provider posting the largest gain in new subscriber additions ever, with the addition of 528,000 new DSL connections in 3Q05," IDC's program manager for consumer broadband markets said.

She added that "cable modems will remain the dominant installed broadband technology in the United States through the end of this decade."
