WiFi zone set for Calif's 'Little Saigon'

Residents of the largest Vietnamese enclave outside of Vietnam will soon be able to keep in closer touch with relatives in Asia thanks to a new WiFi hot zone.

5G Wireless Communications said Tuesday that the city of Westminster, Calif., would be using one of its wireless broadband base stations to create a hot zone in its "Little Saigon" area, home to a large number of Vietnamese and other Asian nationals who do business in Asia or simply want easy contact with family.

In addition, 5G sees Westminster as a training ground for employees as it prepares to move into the burgeoning wireless markets of Southeast Asia, China and Russia.

5G CEO Jerry Dix said Westminster officials were drawn to the relatively inconspicuous "cellular-style" equipment that is mounted in secure rooftop locations and provides non-line-of-sight signal penetration that accommodates standard PDAs and 802.11b/g personal computers.
