In Brief: IBM, Alvarion develop public-safety WiMax

IBM and Alvarion have launched a project to develop a WiMax network for public-safety agencies in Fresno, Calif.

The system's pilot project features IBM mobile applications based on Alvarion broadband and wireless systems.

The goal is development of a multi-layer Internet Protocol system that delivers voice, video and data over wireless.

The network will provide encrypted and compressed data to Fresno's 250 police cars, but will do so with a 900 Megahertz technology that requires a fraction of the nodes needed in comparable WiMax networks.

It also links seamlessly to the Fresno Police Department's legacy 800 MHz narrowband network.
