Earth, space sciences offer good jobs
A recent survey has found most 2003 graduates in Earth and space sciences obtained good paying jobs doing satisfying work in their chosen field.
The survey covered 180 Earth and space science Ph.D. recipients who received degrees from U.S. universities during 2003.
The vast majority, 87 percent, of the graduates had found work in the Earth and space sciences, earning salaries commensurate with or slightly higher than in 2001 and 2002.
Nearly two-thirds, 64 percent, of them were employed in academia (including postdoctoral appointments), with the remainder in government (19 percent), industry (10 percent), and other (7 percent).
Most graduates were positive about their employment situation and found their work challenging, relevant, and appropriate for someone with a Ph.D.
The annual survey of recent Ph.D. recipients in Earth and space sciences was conducted by the American Geophysical Union and the American Geological Institute. The findings appear in the week's issue of Eos, the AGU newspaper.
