NH suicide prevention project focuses on gun shops

(AP)—A campaign developed by health professionals and gun dealers in New Hampshire to raise awareness about preventing firearm suicides is garnering national attention.

Their efforts yielded a set of materials tailored to gun stores and firing ranges to educate industry workers and their customers about suicide prevention. The project has gained notice nationally with groups in 15 other states interested in or already distributing its posters and brochures.

The next step for the campaign, known as The Gun Shop Project, is to get a major gun manufacturer to sponsor its message and help make a standard part of firearm .

Firearms are the leading method of suicide in the U.S., accounting for more deaths than all other means of suicide combined.
