Japanese electronics giant Toshiba plans to market the world's first 3D television that does not need special glasses later this year, a report said on Tuesday.

Japanese electronics giant Toshiba plans to market the world's first 3D television that does not need special glasses later this year, a report said on Tuesday.

Toshiba will unveil three models of the television, which will cost several thousand dollars, before Christmas, the Yomiuri Shimbun said.

The company has developed a new system that emits a number of rays of light with various angles from the screen so that viewers can see stereoscopic images without glasses, the daily said.

"People can enjoy images in three dimensions from various positions and suffer less stress," it said.

Japan's major electronics makers launched this year, but sales have not been as strong as expected while many customers have complained of being irritated by the glasses.

However, a spokeswoman said: "We are not in a position to make any announcement."

I hope this techniology is sound -- because its the only way I will buy a 3D television is without the need for glasses. Maybe wait three years for the technology to mature -- and when I buy my first 3D set the new hologram televisions will be coming out because hollywood is pissed off people figured out how to steal movies again and petabyte drives are available so adding more detail and information will drive the need to create a format that is even harder to copy. --

Don't hold your breath. The technology they are using only works at specific angles to the screen. You have to be sitting in exactly the right spot. It's probably better suited to advertising than home TV.

I wish their would be more research in virtual (or augmented) reality glasses. (vuzix competition) I like my 2d TV just fine, its for relaxing during recreation tasks or background most of the time anyway, while If I want some real entertainment I wish to be pulled in 100%, no living room border.
