AES Geo Energy, a Bulgarian unit of US energy giant AES Corporation, launched on Tuesday the largest 156-megawatt wind farm in Bulgaria, the company said.

The 52-turbine wind farm near Kavarna on Bulgaria's northeast Black Sea coast was officially connected to the country's on Tuesday.

The 156-megawatt park, which cost 270 million euros (398 million dollars) to build, is the biggest in the country and one of the largest in the region.

Economy and Energy Minister Traicho Traikov hailed the project in a statement, saying it brought Bulgaria closer to meeting its target for renewable sources to make up 11 percent of its energy consumption in 2010, and 16 percent in 2020.

With the launching of the new park, Bulgaria now has a total power capacity of 330 megawatts, the ministry statement added.

Most of Bulgaria's currently comes from coal and nuclear power plants.
