Future of green is not so black, say some

The sun peaks through a canopy of trees

The deepening economic crisis may appear to be the perfect storm for environmentalism, but many in and around the green movement contend the opposite, seeing in it a time of opportunity. The conventional view is this: willingness to protect the environment is wedded to prosperity.

Opportunity? The world's economy is currently based on oil, with the US as a leading consumer. Recent oil use has lead to the single greatest transfer of wealth in the history of the world. People are starting to realize that sending hundreds of billions of dollars overseas every year for a fuel that will harm the environment when burned makes no sense. Further, it creates very few jobs and primarily benefits the land owners who control the flow of liquid gold.

Eventually, economies will begin to phase out oil regardless of climate change concerns. When that happens, there will be a new world supplier of energy. That supplier stands to inherit the largest market in the world, and most of the technology is already nearly ready. I'd definitely call that an opportunity.

Doesn't create many jobs? The entire plastics industry, the entire petroleum and refinery industry, the electric industry, the transportaion industries, and every other corollary make up probably close to 50% of the world's jobs. All of which are dependant on oil based energy.

Name one technology that can generate 1/2 the energy that oil can at the same price or less.
