Briefs: Ambient boosts powerline broadband project

Funding has been finalized for an enhancement of Ambient Corporation's pilot Broadband over Powerline (BPL) project in the New York suburbs.

Ambient has signed a contract along with Consolidated Edison and New York state officials that will lead to increased monitoring capabilities along Ambient's BPL project in Westchester County.

BPL is envisioned as a major new source of broadband service in the future once technical issues are sorted out. The increased monitoring will give engineers insight into the analysis of noise on the grid that could interfere with data traffic, Ambient said.

The company said the pilot project is aligned with the New York Public Service Commission's recent decision to work on a framework for BPL service by regulated utilities.
