The Anthropocene: Hard evidence for a human-driven Earth

The evidence for a new geological epoch which marks the impact of human activity on the Earth is now overwhelming according to a recent paper by an international group of geoscientists. The Anthropocene, which is argued to start in the mid-20th Century, is marked by the spread of materials such as aluminium, concrete, plastic, fly ash and fallout from nuclear testing across the planet, coincident with elevated greenhouse gas emissions and unprecedented trans-global species invasions.

An international group of scientists is studying whether has driven the Earth into a new geological epoch - the Anthropocene. They ask: to what extent are human actions recorded as measurable signals in geological strata, and is the Anthropocene world markedly different from the stable Holocene Epoch of the last 11,700 years that allowed human civilization to develop?

The Holocene Epoch has been a time during which human societies advanced by gradually domesticating the land to increase food production, built urban settlements and became proficient at developing the water, mineral and energy resources of the planet. The proposed Anthropocene Epoch, however, is marked as a time of rapid environmental change brought on by the impact of a surge in human population and increased consumption during the 'Great Acceleration' of the mid-20th century.

Dr Colin Waters of the British Geological Survey said: "Humans have long affected the environment, but recently there has been a rapid global spread of novel materials including aluminium, concrete and plastics, which are leaving their mark in sediments. Fossil-fuel combustion has dispersed fly ash particles worldwide, pretty well coincident with the peak distribution of the 'bomb spike' of radionuclides generated by atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons." "All of this shows that there is an underlying reality to the Anthropocene concept", commented Jan Zalasiewicz of the University of Leicester, a co-author and working group Chair.

The study, co-authored by 24 members of the Anthropocene Working Group, shows that humans have changed the Earth system sufficiently to produce a range of signals in sediments and ice, and these are sufficiently distinctive to justify recognition of an Anthropocene Epoch in the Geological Time Scale. In 2016 the Anthropocene Working Group will gather more evidence on the Anthropocene, which will help inform recommendations on whether this new time unit should be formalized and, if so, how it might be defined and characterized.

A number of UK members of the group have contributed to this study, Colin Waters (lead author and Secretary of the group) and Michael Ellis, both from the British Geological Survey, Jan Zalasiewicz, Mark Williams and Matt Edgeworth from Leicester University and Colin Summerhayes from Cambridge University have provided significant input to this study and maintain the UK's strong involvement in research into the Anthropocene concept.

Did you not read the article plaasjaapie?
We have changed the world enough that a geologist a million years from now would find distinct chemical changes in the rock layers marking this time, in combination with dramatically different fossil records.

The additional changes in atmospheric makeup that you don't believe in are only part of the equation, the atmosphere is only about 60 miles thick, and it loses mass exponentially the father from the ocean level you get, the idea that we have changed the geologic record enough to create a chemically distinct eon, which will forever change the course of life on this planet, but can't impact the atmosphere is stupid.

The degree was in Environmental Management, a course in Ecoscience, Thermodynamics of Energy Systems, Environmental Law, Environmental Economics, and the structure and operations of governmental agencies in the field, 1979-1982. What is yours in?

If I discuss my first thesis topic and what happened, I would start an entire set of arguments from otto and Ira, so I won't.

I sure everybody here appreciates not having to hear about him again. And it was really pretty lame too, kind of high schooly or amateury. As you say your self, you wrote him for goobers. That must be why you left off the 70 pages of the professor's comments. 1) They don't like peoples writing papers for them implying they are goobers. 2) Master thesises are not supposed to be written for goobers, they are supposed to sophisticated and professional and sciencey.

I have no such intention. As you have read, I did not earn a degree in engineering, and later got to teach engineers what they should have learned in school. The reason was, I determined it myself, and taught it the way I figured it out. Those who could not relate to the school-route found they could really not just work with it, but actually understand the field, often for the first time.

Yeah, I will take shots for that, but there it is. That is the way I helped start the Power Quality Program for several hundred EPRI member utilities, writing and presenting the Power Quality national course for EPRI. While at PG&E, I got requests for help from customers, and wound up developing the power quality field at PG&E. It will piss off Ira to know I was replaced by a group when I left.

One should note that the focus here was on the major impacts we would leave behind in geologic history, first and foremost being our infrastructure and the "unprecedented trans-global species invasions". This study isn't a criticism, it just IS. We can't be as successful as we have been a species and not leave an impact.

All: No one needs to "save" the planet. Life is extremely tenacious. I truly doubt that we can end it on this planet. The tenacity of Life however is found in its diversity. Single species generally are quite easily wiped out.

Take for example the making of whiskey - the yeast are living in a great environment, and are prospering remarkably. Unfortunately, their environment has limits and their prosperity ends when they die from the poisoning of their accumulated waste products. If the yeast were to improve their lot, would they need to "save" the mash? Of course not. They would need to find ways to save THEMSELVES. Ways to prevent their waste accumulation from changing their closed system into a state that they can no longer prosper in.

Of course, the yeast never do this..... they are far too busy enjoying their remarkable prosperity. I'm quite certain that some of them believe their changing environment is wonderful.

Food/water will be limiting factors IMO. I think the key to stable growth is being more efficient with suburban/urban space... growing fruits/veggies instead of ornamental plants, maybe solar panels will be feasible in some areas so all the space used by sprawl development can also be generating electricity. Getting third world countries caught up and out of "survival mode" will be key on controlling our reproductive rate as well.

Until they fired you. Again.

Who are you? Why do you HIDE? I identified myself, gave my history, proved my experience, showed my degree, sent my thesis, directed you to military websites with my name and picture on them, referred you to the catalog of NASA studies and reports with my name on them, proved I was at Edwards AFB by showing you the front page of the Air Force Flight Test Center newspaper with my name and picture on it. What else would you like?

Time to own up, otto, no more cowering.

Time to own up. Tell us why you think that all of THAT gives you the right to post LIES and MADE-UP FACTS about things you obviously know nothing about?

See? Youre still LYING about your degree.

No sane person would DO this, do you understand?

No more cowering. Own up to your lies and bullshit.

Shall we go into my proof again? I can't blame you for not believing my experiences since they are unusual, but when I proved them, it became "The Truth You Could Not Handle". Screaming filthy words in all caps, you revealed your true self, and its shallowness.

Who are you? Just a cowardly sniper, hiding behind a pseudonym to attack those who actually had a life, unlike you.

Tell us who you are, otto. No more cowering. Come on out, so we can see you.

The amount of ad hominems is getting out of control here. Ira, Ghost, WTF? Go read his first comment again

With all due respect, that is what I have been saying all along. His first day here started like this:

Senior Engineer for PG&E

you do not write from experience or knowledge

In Technical Services for Pacific Gas & Electric

personal experience with the models which completely melted down at Fukushima

and have taken care of them

We developed the most

tested the safety components of the GE Mark I and II BWR

Senior Engineer in Technical Services for Pacific Gas & Electric

Master of Science in Energy and the Environment

from personal experience and education

This is just theater

That is first day one his first article. And I don't even put in the insults he was flinging while he thinking he was being witty glibby and wise. That is just a small sample of his first day, (and every day since.) From one article mind you. His first.

Well, gosh, Ira, it was not all in that first post, was it?

And tell us what you have disproven out of all of that.

Oh, yeah, you forgot Edwards AFB, NASA, DCPA, Igloo White, and my life as an Integrated Circuit Test Engineer for National Semiconductor.

P.S. for everybody. From his second day here,,,,,,,

those with no appreciable education in Climate Science

I tested the safety systems of these Mark I GE BWR's.

I am a 70 year-old technical generalist who probably did too much stuff in life

my part as Research Engineer testing the BWR

my part in the development of the Industrial Hardening Manual

My thesis included the development

I was giving a seminar for San Diego Gas & Electric

guy who got the Palladium invited me to the test

I worked with that technology

I have a Master of Science in this field

I was a Senior Engineer for PG&E in the 1980's.

I enlisted in 1965, and volunteered for the war in 1967

Every single day since then it is the same, only I leave out all the witty glibby wise insults he flung out, there are twice as many of them.

He might care about the environment, I do too me. I really wish he would switch sides because he ain't helping. He is bizarro world Palin.

Well, gosh, Ira, it was not all in that first post, was it?

Yeah it was and that is only a part of it.

And tell us what you have disproven out of all of that.

I let you disprove it all by trying to prove it with smoke and mirrors.

Oh, yeah, you forgot Edwards AFB, NASA, DCPA, Igloo White, and my life as an Integrated Circuit Test Engineer for National Semiconductor.

Skippy you got about 500 pages of postums on your comment library page. Every one is exactly the same stuffs. Choot, most peoples who have been here twice as long as you only have half that many pages. Add them all up and you got the serious mental conditions

Sorry to have done all that. I guess it cut into your fool-the-sucker-time, playing the wise fool, huh? All them couyon and coon-ass postums is really funny, . . yuuuup.

Your complaint is what, . . that I have done too much? Or that I made you read it?

Personally, my major complaint is that after 500 pages of infantile, self-serving postings, physorg hasn't banned george kamburoff like many other sites have.

I can only surmise that, besides the increased traffic he generates, seeing how resilient a lying cheating psychopath can be, and how oblivious he is when confronted time and again with proof that he lies and makes up facts, is somehow informative and enlightening to the community.

After all we're here to learn aren't we? I for one have learned a great deal about lying cheating psychopaths since george showed up.

Imagine this guy as a boss or a politician or a parent or a teacher.

"The World has only one problem, Psychopaths."

I am beginning to believe this.

a Wannabe turning into a Neverwas
George the wannabe engineer.

Youre not and Neverwas an engineer.

George the wannabe MS-in-environmental-mgt (or was it Climate Science... or was it Energy and the Environment?)

Real MS holders in these fields know that opacity emissions have been governed by CFR regs for the last 40 years.

You neverwas an MS holder in anything related.

George the wannabe war hero thinks an airman of the month award and a free dinner makes him so.

You neverwas exceptional at anything in the service.

George the wannabe supertech spook who worked directly for macnamara, was actually a 20yo tech who soldered wires and plugged things in.

Macnamara neverwas aware that you even existed.

George the wannabe polymath expert got his experience and education from holding perhaps 20 jobs during his 'career.

Losing 20 jobs means george could not do any of them.

You neverwas able to hold a job due to your mental deformities.

Hilarious.
