Internet retail giant Amazon says profits it makes on sales of a song by German right-wing anti-immigration PEGIDA movement will be donated to help hundreds of thousands of migrants, many fleeing the Syrian civil war

Online retail giant Amazon said on Thursday it will donate the profits from the online purchase of a tune released by the far-right anti-migrant PEGIDA movement to refugees in Germany.

Entitled "Gemeinsam sind wir stark"—German for "Together we are strong"—the instrumental, which has no lyrics, was released over Christmas.

The anthem drew close to 180,000 views on YouTube, and surged on Amazon.de's music chart to become its bestselling MP3 download, knocking Adele's "Hello" to number two.

The release of the track on Amazon sparked a storm of criticism, with the coming under fire for making money from its sales.

PEGIDA, an acronym for Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the Occident (PEGIDA), had said profits from the sale would be given to homeless Germans.

But Amazon placed a message on its German webpage, saying profits from its sale would be donated to help hundreds of thousands of migrants, many fleeing the Syrian civil war, who have arrived in Germany over the past year.

"Amazon's profits from the sale of this song will go to a non--making organisation supporting refugees," the company said.

PEGIDA started life over a year ago as a xenophobic Facebook group, initially drawing just a few hundred protesters to demonstrations in Dresden.

Interest initially waned after founder Lutz Bachmann posted "selfies" showing him sporting a Hitler hairstyle and moustache but it revived as around a million asylum seekers arrived in Germany this year alone.

Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the Occident. This actually is a good acronym. Choose your religion wisely!

I assume that PEGIDA's intention was to bolster their own HARZ4 incomes ;)

For those who don't understand the reference: PEGIDA is based in East Germany.

East Germany has been the only case in human history where an entire nation became refugee.

East Germany's inhabitants and PEGIDA sympathisers are mostly long-term unemployed (In a country desperately in need of workforce, mind you), living of a long term subsidie called Harz4, mostly male because the female population thought better and went to work to the West instead of waiting for Mother Germany to pay their beers.

And to make it more fun, the Islamic population in Easte Germany is minimal, because nobody wants to live there.

Leipzig and Dresden were starting to attract young people as an alternative to Berlin, but I with these PEGIDA Jihadists doing such a great PR effort I assume that they will stay in the West.... and that's basically what these PEGIDA guys want: Be left alone and get free money.

That's a bit of hyperbole.

Unfortunately it's not as easy as that. You see: after WWII the people who sympathized with the Nazis didn't just vanish into thin air (and quite a few of those were big industrials and middle class), and the remnants of these - and their descendants - pop up whenever such a group gets together. Be it the right wing NPD or AfD parties or the PEGIDA idiots (who argue that the immigrants cost money because they don't work - while at the same time taking away jobs from germans....gotta admire the way they can ignore logic within the span of one sentence. Would put a few of the more cranky posters on here to shame).

And to make it more fun, the Islamic population in Easte Germany is minimal, because nobody wants to live there.

They fear the unkonwn.

yes , I know, but it's not too far from the truth.

It's fun how it's also our own Dutch version of such people who occupy the same "ecological" niche: Zuid Limburg the backwaters of Netherlands, were a group of football hooligans, trailer-park "tokkies" and motorclub members (mostly from No Surrender) create violent incidents putting their own lands-people in danger.

Anyway: Happy New Year ;)

You find these kinds of people everywhere. whether it's the ones that are going for manifest destiny or decry "unamerican" behavior, whether it's the neo-stalinists in Russia, or the right wingers in Poland. This isn't something specific to a particular nation or people. It's small minds that cannot grasp the bigger picture and just go for knee-jerk reactions as soon as someone is different (because they fear 'different' may be 'superior')

But different is just different. It's such an easy concept to get. But there are those that play on those fears and call the resulting mob mentality 'democratic'.

Well that depends. Ethnic germans and german sympathizers throughout europe became refugees after the war, thrown out of countries such as poland, romania, hungary. Many of them did just vanish.

"By 1950, a total of approximately 12 million Germans had fled or been expelled from east-central Europe into Allied-occupied Germany and Austria. Some sources put the total at 14 million..."

"The death toll attributable to the flight and expulsions is disputed, with estimates ranging from 500,000, up to a West German demographic estimate from the 1950s of over 2.0 million."

-This is not to mention the germans in-country who were fleeing the war as the allies advanced on both fronts.

Germans are very familiar with refugee conditions. They are even descended from germanic tribes driven westward from central asia by the mongols.

Culture wars aside the track isn't exactly original in its composition, I offer for your consideration Vangelis 1492 Conquest of paradise; compare and contrast people.
