A group of Egyptian and foreign experts launched Sunday a new bid to unravel the "secrets" of the pyramids, including a search for hidden chambers inside four famed pharaonic monuments.

Architects and scientists from Egypt, France, Canada and Japan will use modern infra-red technology and advanced detectors to map two pyramids at Giza and the two Dahshur pyramids, south of Cairo.

"This special group will study these pyramids to see whether there are still any hidden chambers or other secrets" inside them, Minister of Antiquities Mamduh al-Damati announced at a news conference.

"These engineers and architects will conduct the survey using non-destructive technology that will not harm the pyramids," he said.

Experts said the study, known as "Scan Pyramids," will also be a fresh attempt to understand how the monuments were built in the first place.

Many previous missions have attempted to unravel the mysteries of the pyramids, but archaeologists and scientists have yet to come up with a concrete theory explaining how the structures were built.

Khufu's pyramid, also known as the Great pyramid of Giza—the tallest of all the pyramids—was built by the son of Snefru, founder of the fourth dynasty (2,575-2,465 BC), while the Khafre's pyramid or Chephren was built by the son of Khufu.

The two pyramids at Dahshur were built by Snefru.

"The idea is to find the solution to the mystery of the pyramids," said Mehdi Tayoubi, founder of Paris-based HIP Institute that is participating in the project.

"A similar attempt was made 30 years ago, but this is the first project at a global level using cutting-edge technology to look inside the pyramids," he told AFP.

Project "Scan Pyramids" is expected to last until the end of 2016.

Damati said the "infra-red and muon" technologies that would be used to search the four could also be useful to look for a possible hidden chamber in King Tutankhamun's tomb, which may be the burial place of Queen Nefertiti.

Archaeologists have never discovered the mummy of the legendary beauty, but renowned British archaeologist Nicholas Reeves said in a recent study that her tomb could be in a secret chamber adjoining Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of Kings at Luxor, southern Egypt.

Reeves, who was in Luxor in September to probe his theory, believes one door of Tutankhamun's tomb could conceal the burial place of Nefertiti.

Egypt has already approved using radars to search the boy king's tomb, which was found by British Egyptologist Howard Carter in 1922.

There is not a shred of evidence these are tombs. There is no evidence they were robbed or even entered prior to the accidental discovery of the entrance using dynamite.

This is wrong, no mummified figures were ever found in a pyramid. You should research for yourself before stating erroneous beliefs.

Okay, I am surprised, I admit, to find out that there were no mummies found in pyramids. That was unexpected. I think this might be a cool thing to talk about, if we can miraculously keep it civil. This is interesting.

Here is an excerpt from a Middle Kingdom papyrus talking about what some have claimed is a pyramid being re-opened and robbed.

Middle Kingdom Papyrus at Leiden (Ref: 5 pp. 58).

'The contemporary account of 'Ipu-wer', is a long list of lament, revealing a state of turmoil and revolt. "All is in ruin" he said, "A man kills his brother. Blood is everywhere. A few laws of the judgement hall are cast forth. Officials are slain and their records are taken away. The secrets of the kings of upper and Lower Egypt are divulged. What the pyramid concealed has become empty and the palace is destroyed'.

The section under "Question: When was the Great pyramid first re-entered?" gives more insight, but I don't want to paste it all here.

The real issues are:

a) Why in the fuck are they dragging their damned feet with any of this?

Seriously ground penetrating radar etc... they should have gone and done it ages ago.....

b) Sure you don't want to recklessly ruin them - but in another 500 million years, after going to the bottom of the oceans and the top of some mountains, they will probably all be percolating in the core of the earth anyway.

So just bloody well get on with it.

c) This pissing around forever, tippy toeing around on egg shells, totally shits me.

They think they might have discovered a secret chamber with a royal burial in Tut's tomb and they said, "Shite! Why haven't we looked for that before", and now they're going to retrace those steps. Seems like the whole story from where I sit.

The series Ancient Aliens

is a load of codswallop.

Perhaps, but they did manage to convince me that the Pyramid was once used as some sort of chemical processing facility, supported by the salt deposits in otherwise well-shielded chambers.

Further, we know that they had a primitive knowledge of electricity to the extent of at least electroplating and probably a bit beyond, regardless of the "light bulb" theory from the AA series.

It's possible that the ruling party had knowledge of these things, but was not yet advanced enough to be "invincible" to other civilizations. Thus the knowledge was lost at some point during political or religious upheaval.

I don't buy one bit the whole "microwave emitter" conjecture, as that is purely based on their obsession with contacting the alleged "Anunaki".

I am, however, convinced they had machine tools, because a "saw" is described in the Bible with regards to the making of the 1st temple.

@wade & socks et al
right, because there is no such thing as a hand tool called a saw, right?
https://en.wikipe...wiki/Saw

i mean, it would be ridiculous to assume hand tools like a "saw" would be used in biblical times because, after all, there are so many machine tools and electric stuff to choose from in any Lowe's, right? and that means your BS chemical factory must be true, right?

This is wrong, no mummified figures were ever found in a pyramid
"Parts of a mummy found inside a 4,300-year-old pyramid could be Queen Seshseshet, the mother of the first pharaoh of Egypt's 6th dynasty, archaeologists have announced.

"A skull, pelvis, legs, and pieces of a torso wrapped in linen lay inside a 16-foot-tall (5-meter-tall) pyramid—the third "subsidiary" tomb found next to that of the pharaoh Teti, who ruled for 22 years before he was assassinated.

"Seshseshet's pyramid was discovered last November in Saqqara, the vast burial ground near modern-day Cairo that was part of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis."

The 'secret of the pyramids' is fairly easy to understand. The world was constantly ravaged by overpopulation and all the conflict it caused. Egypt itself would be overrun by the sea peoples centuries later.

The giza structures are a statement on the futility of defense. The pyramids were the greatest defensive structures ever built and yet they were pillaged after only 200 years.

The secret is the sphinx, which represents the lion in the grass, patiently observing the herd, looking for weaknesses, and waiting for the best time to attack.

This most important lesson here is the futility of defense. The best defense is a good offense, to reach out and destroy the threat before it has the chance to destroy you.

No civilization will last for long if all it does is build defenses. A patient enemy will wait, observe, and attack at his leisure.

He must be destroyed before he has the chance to do this.
