Inspired by art, lightweight solar cells track the sun

September 8, 2015
solar cells

Solar cells capture up to 40 percent more energy when they can track the sun across the sky, but conventional, motorized trackers are too heavy and bulky for pitched rooftops and vehicle surfaces.

Now, by borrowing from kirigami, the ancient Japanese art of paper cutting, researchers at the University of Michigan have developed that can have it both ways.

"The design takes what a large tracking solar panel does and condenses it into something that is essentially flat," said Aaron Lamoureux, a doctoral student in and first author on the paper in Nature Communications.

Residential rooftops make up about 85 percent of solar panel installations in the U.S., according to a report from the Department of Energy, but these roofs would need significant reinforcing to support the weight of conventional sun-tracking systems.

A team of engineers and an artist developed an array of small solar cells that can tilt within a larger panel, keeping their surfaces more perpendicular to the sun's rays.

"The beauty of our design is, from the standpoint of the person who's putting this panel up, nothing would really change," said Max Shtein, associate professor of and engineering. "But inside, it would be doing something remarkable on a tiny scale: the solar cell would split into tiny segments that would follow the position of the sun in unison."

Solar cell researchers think of tracking in terms of how much of a solar panel the sun can "see." When the panel is at an angle, it looks smaller. By designing an array that tilts and spreads apart when the sun's rays are coming in at lower angles, they raise the effective area that is soaking up sunlight.

To explore patterns, the team of engineers worked with paper artist Matthew Shlian, a lecturer in the U-M School of Art and Design. Shlian showed Lamoureux and Shtein how to create them in paper using a plotter cutter. Lamoureux then made more precise patterns in Kapton, a space-grade plastic, using a carbon-dioxide laser.

Although the team tried more complex designs, the simplest pattern worked best. With cuts like rows of dashes, the plastic pulled apart into a basic mesh. The interconnected strips of Kapton tilt in proportion to how much the mesh is stretched, to an accuracy of about one degree.

To make the solar array, Kyusang Lee, a doctoral student in electrical engineering, built custom solar cells in the lab of Stephen Forrest, the Peter A. Franken Distinguished University Professor of Engineering and Paul G. Goebel Professor of Engineering. He and Lamoureux attached them to an uncut piece of Kapton, leaving spaces for the cuts. Then, Lamoureux patterned the Kapton with the laser cutter.

The design with the very best solar-tracking promise was impossible to make at U-M because the solar cells would be very long and narrow. Scaling up to a feasible width, the cells became too long to fit into the chambers used to make the prototypes on campus, so the team is looking into other options.

The optimized design is effective because it stretches easily, allowing a lot of tilt without losing much width. According to the team's simulations of during the summer solstice in Arizona, it is almost as good as a conventional single-axis tracker, offering a 36 percent improvement over a stationary panel. Conventional trackers produce about 40 percent more energy than stationary panels under the same conditions, but they are bulky, prone to catching the wind and ten or more times heavier, Shtein said.

"We think it has significant potential, and we're actively pursuing realistic applications," he said. "It could ultimately reduce the cost of solar electricity."

Good morning, Ira. I see you have followed me around blindly awarding me ones. I guess you got straightened out about my experience and works, since you stopped that silly game.

I would like it better if you would debate the issues, not personal ones, but the science. I know you can, once you abandon that Cajun stuff.

Yeah, I am just as straightened out as I was before. Pretty much decided me that you are a liar when it comes to your degrees and diplomas and six different kinds of senior engineer. I am still waiting for you to remember the names of the schools that give you the master degree and junior diploma.

@ Captain-Skippy. I am sorry this couyon is dragging you into his show I do not know why he would drag you into this, except he is convinced we are all really stupid here. All this sending and proving business so far has been a bunch of smoke and mirrors without really proving anything.

He has my email and send me a news letter that said he dropped out of college then went to the Air Force radio school for 32 weeks. He won a monthly prize for that and the news letter say he got $25 gift certificate and meal on the Rotary Club.

All I want is the name of the school he got a master degree or the bachelor junior diploma from. Either he don't have one, or is ashamed because it comes from the interweb for $25.

Ira, I knew you could not admit error. What you misrepresent is the front page of the newspaper of the Air Force Flight Test Center reporting how I was Airman of the Month. What you also left out was the compendium of reports commissioned by NASA, with mine on the top of page 41. You also left out the history of Igloo White I sent, the mission I helped to put together, deploy, and operate in Southeast Asia, and the websites of which have my name and picture.

Now, I sent a copy of the diploma and a copy of the body of the thesis, for your amusement, I assume. I am waiting to see if you have intelligent questions regarding the technology, the act of integration, or the need for it today.

I'm betting on receiving some face-saving snark, instead.

Good stuff. The Mrs will actually like it, because I tried to make it readable for ordinary folk, not those trying to show they can do quadratic equations. It was written for us, not the folks at the college.

There is the schematic on the last page, if it is readable. It has been compressed from a 35 X 24 inch plot. I may have a better one. It used to be color coded with energy flow in red, mass flow in some other color and process parameters in blue at the inputs and outputs at every step.

Remember, this was done in 1980, approved in 1981, and I graduated with the class of 1982, a long time ago.

Now I could be wrong glam-Skippy, but Mrs-Ira-Skippy is not often her. Your "degree" is not a Master of Science in Environmental Management. It is a degree given out for mostly submitting "life experiences for college credits". It is given not from a specialized department, but is for peoples to pay money and get a degree because they done a lot of different things but none of them for a specialist degree. You send in the minimum requirements and the money and get your degree from "Professional Studies", not from the school teaching Environmental Managements.

He did, but it is nothing like what he claimed. That is why he didn't want to send it for the last four or three weeks.

He got the degree for "life experiences" (and the appropriate fees). Not from the Environmental Management school that the students that get that degree from, his came from the general purpose catch-all called the "School of Professional Studies" (that means life experiences at that college.)

So no actual courses in anything required? Nice deal. This is how I got my masters of divinity from the church of voodoo economics in tulsa.

George still thinks it gives him the authority to post all sorts of made-up bullshit.

Who but a true sicko would think that people would fall for that sort of thing?
The signatures and the front page and the cover and much of the background material were not part of it. Read it
They ARE part of it. You need to provide them.
I earned my degree
Its not a real degree. No undergrad degree, no course work, no formal instruction, no tests... just a rubber stamp on a 'thesis' about a subject you were never formally educated in, and a check.

Unless you have a BS? If so why dont you send it to ira?

I promise.

It was written to be "goober-friendly", and was ahead of its time for that kind of clarity.

IOW it contained nothing technical, no evidence of any engg ability or knowledge, just narrative. A Popular Science mag article.

Even goobers with no educations could write that sort of thing. Especially to attain a non-technical degree.

At least supply the missing pages. Perhaps some of the reviewers were engineers.

Or not.

Consider who wrote him I would be surprised if it wasn't goober friendly. But anyhoo, glam-Skippy as much as I enjoy fooling around with you, it is starting to get a little boring now. So you can go ahead and play engineer without me distracting your attentions.

Oh yeah, I almost forget. Keep up the good work with the Sarah Palin type of slogans, I am sure you are really rallying the base and they all are proud to have you as the official sloganeer-Skippy for the cause.

Oh yeah, I almost forget again. You can have the last word or so if you would like to have him. But the last word or so don't mean day after day of your snippity sniping one liners that you think everybody does to you but you never do to anybody else, So don't be begging me to come back and fool around some some more, otherwise you will end up complaining I am picking on you again. Okayeei Cher?

All you new-agey liberals with the brains bigger than anybody else usually end up showing their true colors. So you have gone from the racial slurs about N.O. Mardi Gras Tribes to something that has to do with the sexual orientation?

That is exactly why I wish you would change causes. You are an embarrassment.

Some schools offer degree/programs that are specialised that do not always reflect upon the certificate issued
such as: A BS in certain Electrical Engineering degree's with specialty emphasis on Aeronautical and satelite communications engineering, Robotics and bio-mechanical engineering studies... it will read: Electrical Engineering- with emphasis on aeronautical and satellite communications (my daughter has this)
the degree ignores the rest, but transcripts include it for MS & further ED
just sayin

Some mail order schools offer degrees for just a check and a self-stamped envelope.

Apparently george has offered no indication that his 'degree' is not one of those.

And certainly no indication that he learned anything that would give him the right to use it to claim the expertise that he does.

The content of his posts prove that he doesnt have that expertise. Many posters such as aa and eikka would attest to this.

And it doesnt matter if he has a degree or not.

Good one. George probably used the 'goober-friendly' argument when his thesis was criticized for lack of content.

Well I don't always see eye to eye with Eikka-Skippy on some things. But I like to up vote his postums because he sticks with the technical side of the issue on hand and usually does not get all emotional and distraught. He explains things he is thinking pretty good without a lot of slogans and stuffs from the political side of things. He sticks to the science.

glam-Skippy sticks to the slogans and political side of things and never the science or technical stuffs (when he ever tries he usually trips over the basic stuff). But he thinks is "debating" the science just because he gets in the jab about the OTHER guy getting political.

He is as transparent as my new perfect vision windows from Lowes, but is so stupid he thinks he is carrying the day and putting the goobers in place. I really wish he would change sides and pretend to be the Tea-Party-Skippy. His slogans make his causes the BIG JOKE.

That is all well and good except the school he got the degree from (is a good school mind you) gives out an official Master of Science in Environmental Management.(That is what he called two different times here). But that school ALSO awards out Master of Science Professional Studies as part of a "life experience for credit" program. That's the one I saw the picture of.

Call the school about the "life experience" credit stuffs, they can explain better than I ever could try to. I had help from Mrs-Ira-Skippette on this. That's how I found out about the missing stuffs (80 pages if you believe glam-Skippy) in his "goober friendly" thesis.

And I will tell you trut, Mrs-Ira-Skippette is getting tired of this one and me. That is why I tried to tell glam-Skippy to get the last word in but he had to come back with the red neck slurring again.

"Following widespread concern that the criminal justice and mental health systems are failing to deal effectively with dangerous psychopaths, there is a movement in several countries to instigate fundamental legal reform. The most controversial suggestion is to make it possible for individual who have severe personality disorders to be detained in secure mental institutions even if they have been accused of no crime. Although these particular provisions have alarmed civil liberties campaigners, the raft of measures also includes a major initiative within the prison service to improve the handling of those with APD--including psychopaths.

Tracking the sun is less important with amorphous panels, which are better at capturing ambient light. The cost of cells is down below the point where tracking is a pressing economic issue

While tracking is no longer what I would call "pressing", if we're talking about a 40% difference, I don't think price stops being a consideration, other than that the method for compensating needs to be cheaper. This proposal sounds like it should be cheaper than 40% (or 36%, in this case) more cells to get the same results. What I don't understand is why it should take so long to develop.

Here is the paper:

I would be interested in a dissection and explanation of this paper by our educated forum members explaining how the proposed results were gained.

"What I don't understand is why it should take so long to develop."

Because the return of solar is still inefficient. We are still very far away from getting remotely close to a solar solution that can support human activity on large scales.

This proposal sounds like it should be cheaper than 40% (or 36%, in this case) more cells to get the same results. What I don't understand is why it should take so long to develop.

There's always a couple of steps that have to be looked at before getting something like this to market. e.g:
- How does it behave over the long run? Does the morphing ability change with environemntal conditions? (e.g. due to changes in the material due to UV exposure over time or due to ambient temperature?)
- Can the process be easily incorporated into existing manufacturing plants? (i.e. does it make economic sense for a company to take their factory offline for n months to upgrade or should they keep making their regular cells and wait until they build their next plant)

It's a very interesting idea, but it's still a lab prototype. Certainly 5 (or more) years till you see these on the market.
