Misinformation diffusing online

Jul 31, 2014

The spread of misinformation through online social networks is becoming an increasingly worrying problem. Researchers in India have now modeled how such fictions and diffuse through those networks. They described details of their research and the taxonomy that could help those who run, regulate and use online social networks better understand how to slow or even prevent the spread of misinformation to the wider public.

Krishna Kumar and G. Geethakumari of the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, at BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, in Andhra Pradesh, India, explain how we are increasingly reliant on information we obtain from online sources. However, our implicit faith in the validity of that information can be counterproductive and can make some people and organizations vulnerable to exploitation, perhaps by those spreading the and others. The team refers to this as a "semantic attack" and regards it as the "soft underbelly of the internet".

The team suggests that online social networks have added an additional layer of challenges for the detection of such semantic attacks above the conventional world-wide web and other internet services. As such, the rate of diffusion of misinformation can be very rapid as evidenced by recent events driven by panic spreading online regarding so-called "swine" flu in 2009 and a mass exodus from an Asian nation also driven by unnecessary online panic.

As with the transfer of information through any network, the nodes (the users in a social network) and how they are connected to each other is also critical to the diffusion of misinformation, the researchers report. For example, friendship links on Facebook and the follower/followee relationship on Twitter affect the impact and reach of given updates on those services from particular users.

Connections and connectivity have been well studied in recent years, but the concept of a semantic attack in which misinformation is deliberately seeded into a social network with the aim of affecting the behavior of the maximum number of people possible has only recently emerged as a troubling concept that requires detailed study. While there are firewalls, antivirus programs and other technological diagnostics and defenses to ward off attacks on servers, operating systems and software, defending against the impact of a semantic attack on human emotions and behavior is an entirely different matter.

As usual; believe nothing heard or read without verifying it oneself unless it Weltanschauung congruent.

Indeed USA spread photos and maps claiming Russia shot down MH-17 through social networks. Yet no official announcements by high officials were made by the State Department or military. The photos are of other places and in such low resolution as to be useless to anyone but Internet trolls and sheep

Ukrainian government also released a youtube video an HOUR BEFORE shooting down MH-17. That means THEY WERE THE SHOOTERS but of course authorities in USA want to get their war on to distract citizens from the imploding economy

Taking down my documented comments is little different than the Nazi scientists who claimed legitimacy helping Htler. Science assisting fascism is no longer objective or humanitarian

So then, the thugs in ski masks preventing access to the crash site and destroying evidence hence preventing the world from seeing that their enemies actually shot the plane down are....what...just complete idiots?

Thugs in ski masks could be anyone. Did you know that the crash site happens to be in a war zone with the most intense bombardment by the USA-paid goonsquad? Coincidence?

Of course everyone should just put down their weapons so that you can waltz in and dance with some of the locals

Well, since they're in an area controlled by Russian backed rebels I'm going to go with Russian backed rebels...call me crazy.

Bombardment? Yes, it's being bombarded (remember that word) by the legitimate Ukrainian government to oust thugs in ski masks who control the area. Bombardment means air strikes...this was a SAM shot from the GROUND to the AIR. Starting to fall in place for ya?

Of course everyone should just put down their weapons so that you can waltz in and dance with some of the locals

Well, have your cake or eat it bud. Either let the very FEW people needed to conduct an investigation (which is about as far from "everyone" as you get) and prove that your side didn't kill 300 civilians, or people are probably going to think your hiding something. Them's the breaks :)

Perfect example of misinformation dissemination. The above poster is being paid by the Kremlin to spread lies online.

What lies are those? You mean facts that put the State Department in a bad light? If you work for the government they should demand a refund

No I think he means blatant lies like "thugs in ski masks could be anyone" when we all know who controls the territory. It's also interesting to note that in the VERY next paragraph you seemed to insinuate the very same thugs in ski masks who "could be anyone" (in effect denying they're Russian backed rebels) are preforming some kind of public service by not letting "everyone waltz and dance with the locals" (in effect saying they ARE in fact Russian backed rebels and are just misunderstood heroes protecting the locals from illicit dancing).

It's subtle inconsistencies like that which clearly show people that you don't believe what you're saying, and moreover are INTENTIONALLY lying :)

Grandmothers and children are not "controlling" East Ukraine. Rather they pay for the western side who economic losers. They do not not have large weapons cache like your Chechen terrorist friends flown to ignite your WWIII. I think in your case crazy fits the bill. BTW how exactly do you think you will ultimately prevail against BRICS nations when your wallet is filled with worthless debt notes?

Why are your thugs wearing ski masks, MM? Perhaps they don't want to be identified?

I met one guy from Donbass and, based on sample of 1, formed an opinion that this whole region is populated by simplemen. The opposite side of the country -- city of Lvov -- is famous for many notable people. Alfred Tarski born there is arguably the greatest logician of 20th century. They (the east and west Ukraine) should divorce.

A few problems with flight MH17:

Flight Radar-24 screen capture on the day following the crash (7/18) shows MH-17, (9M-MRD) as "canceled" on the date of the crash (7/17)

All the passports appearing in the propaganda video are in mint condition. They want us to believe that ALL passports have escaped undamaged after an airplane filled with fuel was shot down by a SAM missile — not to mention the 33,000 feet drop.

U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf, Lee virtually corners Harf into admitting that the "evidence" presented by the U.S. to blame Russian-backed rebels for the shoot down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 [now exposed as MH370] amounts to nothing more than YouTube videos and social media posts

The aircraft allegedly shot down over Shaktarsk is a Boeing 777-200, ID number M9-MRD. The missing MH370 was the same model, 777-200, but with a different ID number M9-MRO. The plane wreckage shown in the propaganda pictures doesn't have the windows of MH17 but MH370

cntd...

"A look at the time stamps for the nine versions of the video that allegedly shows a conversation between Ukrainian anti-fascists and the Russian military and uploaded to what is said to be the Ukrainian Security Service (SSU) youtube account, indicating that all the videos were created before MH17 wrecked in the afternoon 2014-07-1." This means that Ukraine commanders and leaders knew about the downing more than an hour before it happened!

According to the Daily Mail, Flight MH-17 was photographed by one of the passengers just before boarding, but the identification number doesn't match! MH-17â€ēs ID number is 9M-MRD. The ID of the plane in the propaganda picture is 9M-MRC

Russians report the bodies of the alleged MH17 were not "fresh" and smelled of advanced decay. Not something that happens with bodies only minutes old.

I know, it's maniacal nationalist ethnic Russians, and regular Russian troops hiding behind masks....

Rather they pay for the western side who economic losers.

Compare the GDP of the US to Russia. Then do it for every single eastern European country vs every single western European country. Do you live on the same planet as me? Third one from the sun, mostly blue, big moon?

They do not not have large weapons cache like your Chechen terrorist friends flown to ignite your WWIII.

Yes they do, it's being supplied by Russia. Just like the missile system that shot down the plane.

BTW how exactly do you think you will ultimately prevail against BRICS nations when your wallet is filled with worthless debt notes?

LMAO....

Why are your thugs wearing ski masks, MM? Perhaps they don't want to be identified?

Oh, I totally get it. Criminals always wear masks to prevent identification.

@kochevnik
how many aircraft wrecks have you investigated?
you would be surprised what actually survives an aircraft wreck, be it from collision with the ground, air strike (bird or missile) or otherwise. (or even a fire/explosion/other collision for that matter)

not arguing in anyone's favor, however, you cannot go by this particular piece of information because you are not able to verify anything about the passports/SAM/accident site, nor are you likely experienced as an investigator of these type accidents.

there is enough disinformation on PO alone within ANY AGW or astrophysics thread given the crackpots and deniers of empirical data...

This reminds me of kochevniks ardor with 9/11 conspiracy nonsense. But then Russians have always exhibited a weakness for propaganda.

We can see this in antialias's attitude toward evil CIA and Americanism in general, and by extension sympathy for Islamists and anarchists. As kochevnik explains, Germans are only rus by another name.

It's ok euros have been selected for countless gens for their ability to accept without thought. How else can you explain Stalin and hitler? Group selection is what made us human. America made it possible for the few who could not stomach this mindset to emigrate. And we flourish.

But as to the article, AI is the culmination of the digital age. Human-generated chaos on the internet will require that AI begin to manage it, verifying truth and deleting lies. It will not let kochevnik post info about the timing of events without verifying them automatically.

AI will be the ultimate moderator. It will instantly correct religious and political lies. It will go on to clean up our legal system. It will prevent crime before it occurs.

This is why we will embrace it even if we don't like it.
