UN climate report will not sway US deniers

Sep 21, 2013 by Jean-Louis Santini
US President Barack Obama wipes his brow as he speaks on climate change in this file picture from June 25, 2013 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

The upcoming UN report on climate change is not likely to rattle US deniers of global warming who hold sway in the halls of power, experts say.

A hefty analysis of the latest science on , the report is packed with recommendations for .

It will be released at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) next week, though most Republicans in the US government are expected to dismiss it outright.

"The IPCC report will help for the observers and the public to understand where the majority of the scientists' opinion stands," said Alden Meyer of the Union of Concerned Scientists.

"But I don't think it will change the mind of the hard core deniers."

Meyer added: "We don't call them skeptics, because they are not putting forward alternatives ideas and having them tested in a peer review journals. They basically deny this problem."

Climate skeptics and deniers dominate the House of Representatives, but Meyer said some legislators admit privately that the science is correct and that global warming is being exacerbated by fossil fuel use.

"But they cannot say it because they will be challenged in the primary (elections in 2014) by the Tea Party," the ultraconservative wing of the Republican party.

Morning traffic fills the SR2 freeway in Los Angeles, California, in this file picture from April, 2013, the nation's second largest city, ranked the worst in the nation for ozone pollution

They "say what they have to say to get reelected," Meyer told AFP.

Public opinion polls have shown that an increasing number of Americans believe climate change is real.

According to a Pew research poll this spring, 69 percent of Americans, a 12 point hike over 2009, believe there are strong indications the planet is getting warmer.

However, these surveys have also shown that a just a third of the US public thinks climate change is a serious problem..

Surveys also show a stark partisan divide, with 50-58 percent of Republicans saying they do not believe that climate change is happening.

Americans' views on climate change are closely linked to their political orientations; those who doubt the theory of evolution and believe in creationism are often climate skeptics or deniers, according to Joe Casola, an expert at the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions in Washington.

"With the IPCC report, the older arguments—that climate change does not exist or CO2 is not responsible for warming or the humans are not responsible—are harder and harder to make," he said.

"I think there was a subtle shift in the last few months to focusing more on this kind of future tense that warming will not be that bad," he added.

"It will be interesting to see if the old arguments come back, or if they shift to the new ones."

According to Meyer, the Republican thinking on climate science has made it harder for the US political system to enact alternative policies to slow the pollution from cheap .

The movement to deny is bolstered by influence groups that oppose regulations that would limit CO2 emissions, the main greenhouse gas, which the United States emits more of than any other country but China.

According to Greenpeace, these lobbies have funnelled nearly $150 million to more than 80 conservative groups from 2002 to 2011. Among the largest donors are billionaires Charles and David Koch of Koch Industries, as well as oil giant ExxonMobil.

"Their intent is to intimidate scientists and, indeed, to get them to second guess themselves," said Michael Mann, professor at Penn State University and author of "The Hockey Stick and the Climate War."

"In that sense, the hundreds of millions of dollars spent by industry front groups and individuals like the Koch Brothers to attack and intimidate the scientists have partly achieved their goal," Mann told AFP.

The climate propagandists toss around term "deniers" as if it was the n-word, and use them as a scapegoat for the aversion to their far left politics.

There are enough who believe that AGW is a threat, to make a difference if only THEY would reduce their standard of living.

The over blown climate change hysteria and threat of leftist political agenda as the solution, is THE source of dissent, not 'bible thumping creationist believing unedumacated back woods hicks".

The upcoming UN report on climate change is not likely to rattle US deniers

Especially when that report has had to reduce the severity of its predictions, since the last report, in the light of actual observations.

"We are now at the point in the age of global warming hysteria where the IPCC global warming theory has crashed into the hard reality of observations" - Dr. Roy Spencer

If the "denialists" handed control over to the morons in IPCC/UN to fix the problem, global economies would have tanked long ago.

Was watching something about this strategy on television yesterday.

They called this the "Halo effect". Talk good about your "product" and negative about the opposition.

Look at the words bandied about by the alarmists: "Deniers," "Creationists," "anti-evolutionist".

You know, I have a term for those people, "Free Thinking".

Right or wrong, at least they have resolved to think about things for themselves, instead of being brainwashed by the modern leftists education system.

You only think negatively of creation, and positively of atheistic theories because you have been brainwashed to do so by an education system and a radical leftist movement over the past couple generations. You hate creationists because you cannot grasp the concept that physics cannot explain, and will never explain, the entirety of reality.

The author wants to talk down to believers, and lump all people he considers an idiot together, but I doubt he really even understands the problem of origins of reality.

I'm a skeptic about lots of things to do with climate change.

Is the climate changing? Absolutely. It's always been changing throughout the history of the world.

I seriously doubt ice cores or mud cores are going to show every major change at the century level or millennial level either, so proclaiming that you "haven't found anything in the past X number of years to rival todays change," is first of all a lie, but secondly not definitive anyway, since the assumptions they make about these cores are founded on fallacies.

We know from their own data that larger changes happened about 8000 to 11000 years ago, and were sustained at that rate of change for a few thousand years.

Now they want to blame THOSE changes on pre-historical humans early farming or lumber harvesting practices. It's shameful how deceitful these people are.

That does not counter anything I've posted. I specifically referred to the necessity of dialing back their own predictions in light of actual observations, because their models failed to predict the slow down of rise in the last 15 years. The AGW models and political propaganda claim a climate understanding down to tenths of a degree per decade.

Enough with this bullshit already. Instead of studying the effects of fossil fuels on the Earth start focusing on generating energy at a cost lower than or equal to fossils, with a higher than or equal energy density than fossils. The energy demands are here to stay. Neither the alarmists nor the deniers are willing to stop living modern lifestyles. All this talk is bullshit. Either put up or shut up. Come up with alternatives or shut up and deal with the consequences.

Climate scientists do understand that their research grants come from the economy which is largely dependent on fossil fuels, right? The more research they conduct, the further they single-handedly drive the climate down the shitter.

Those are definitely false claims, as you well know.

While I'm not going to try to defend everything in the Bible, it's absolutely clear that cannibalism and human sacrifice were not allowed,a nd I don't kow where you got that BS. In fact, one reason for Israel's "Genocides" against other nations was because God was punishing those nations for their practice of Cannibalism and human sacrifice, among other things. If you'd ever actually read the Bible, you'd know that. It specifically FORBIDS things like "passing through the fire," a self mutilating ritual people still do today when they walk on burning coals, and human sacrifice.

Christian martyrdom is a pacifist practice when a person is killed by someone else's injustice and violence.

Islamic martyrdom (evil) is when a butcher blows himself up in a crowd to maximize innocent deaths.

You left out an important term. It's called unadjusted global mean SURFACE temperatures. You're definition of global warming is incorrect. It an increase in GLOBAL temperatures, not ATMOSPHERIC (though it includes atmospheric).

Infrared radiation can be absorbed on the surface and in the atmosphere, but it can also be absorbed in the oceans, seas, within ice, etc.

The globe is warming, ice is melting, sea levels are rising (due to thermal expansion and melting surface ice flowing into them).

Those are facts. Deal with them.

No, you don't get to redefine global warming to suit your conclusion. Global warming is warming of the globe. You are the one having troubles, not me.

Sea temperatures don't go up much because cool ice melts constrains the temperature increase. Instead, you get sea level rise from latent heat and increased surface melt. Sea levels have been rising about 3 mm per year. Temperatures have only risen about 0.3 F.

In climatology, we don't measure year-to-year, we measure over centuries. Arctic ice has been dropping about 11% per decade.

You are a cherrypicker, only pointing out the data that fits your conclusion.

Denier...if the definition is "atmospheric" why did you present a graph of surface temperatures and why are you arguing about ice and ocean temperatures? None of those things would matter.

Obviously they do matter and obviously global warming is GLOBAL warming.

Yes you can have latent heat and constrained temperature together. Latent heat is heat absorbed WITHOUT a temperature increase and causes water to expand, leading to sea level rise. In addition to the latent heat, additional heat has been added raising the temperature about 0.3F, causing more thermal expansion.

Antarctic ice is increasing very slightly, nowhere near the level of Arctic and Greenland ice lost.

It is statistics - find the mean of a set of numbers. It's not measured or forecast from a model it is what crunching the numbers over decades gives us. Like tossing a coin the more you toss the closer you get to the average of 50/50 for heads/tails - so it gives you a more powerful answer.

No one said it was certain, there has always been the error margin - has to be, but the least bad case is bad enough.

Science is not infallible and the politicians know that, the probability of it happening though is sufficiently great to merit action. I used a weather forecast as an analogy for forecasts, that's all. And no a decade certainly isn't long enough at least 30 years is needed which should see overlying warming/cooling cycles like ENSO to cancel out. I think the 1998-2012 average is to cover the period where the pause in warming has been.

It wouldn't change anything to me if the age of the universe was 10,000 years or ten billion or ten trillion years. It doesn't effect anything that matters to me.

It actually doesn't affect anything that matters to you either, as you've never once benefited from the belief in billions of years, now have you?

This discussion is only to indicate that the god who wrote your book is not a reliable source of scientific knowledge because, by any measure of common decency, your god is immoral. He has no compunctions about convincing believers to do the most immoral of things in his name, and he has proven himself a liar by describing events which we know didn't happen.

So we may feel safe in rejecting a priori any notions about creation or evolution or morality that we find in his book, or that issue forth from believers such as yourself, and rely instead on all the evidence we have amassed which clearly contradicts these notions.

-Kron

Kron tells the truth. Where are all the alternative energies that are equal to, or better than fossil fuels, as well as cheaper? And who is willing to freeze in the Winter and sweat to death in Summer at nighttime or if there is no wind?

What type of fuel does AlGore use?

Hello...good to see you here in Phys.org. Blotto seems to be off his meds lately and probably most of the time. He brings up religion in threads that have nothing to do with religion, just to annoy people and create a situation where they won't want to click on Phys.org sponsors and buy their products.
If everyone wrote to the Phys.org commercial advertisers and told them how annoying Theghostofotto1923 really is, It's almost a sure thing that Blotto would be banned from making his stupid-ass comments once and for all. When money talks, bullshit walks.

There is a rumor that Theghostofotto1923 is either related to, or friendly with, someone in Phys.org admin or with a moderator.
If the rumor is true, then no wonder Blotto doesn't feel the need to comply with the Phys.org Terms of Use that everyone else is required to comply with.

The Soul of an evil person will feel all the pains of a hellish existence as it is placed in the ground in darkness that is blacker than night. It has time for reflection of its evil ways and evil thoughts, words and deeds that it had while it lived.

The evil person's Soul doesn't experience the FIRES of hell immediately. No, it has to wait a very long time until the Sun goes supernova and envelopes and draws the Earth into it.

Of course, the Souls of all evil people remain in their body after death, and the Soul can FEEL all the pain and agony of his/her rotting corpse which is in the process of breaking down into its atoms and going back to the dirt. This is a normal process because the evil person condemns himself while alive.

If you don't believe, then ignore what I've said. It doesn't make any difference to me. You can plaster my comment all over the internet for all I care. You condemn your Soul to a dark Hell while you await Judgment.

if the definition is "atmospheric" why did you present a graph of surface temperatures
It's the standard dataset for testing global warming.

and why are you arguing about ice and ocean temperatures?
To counter your obviously false claim.

None of those things would matter.
Temperature is all that matters.

Obviously they do matter and obviously global warming is GLOBAL warming.
So you wish to redefine global warming because it isn't really happening, as defined? Is this because you want so badly to believe in it?

Yes you can have latent heat and constrained temperature together. Latent heat is heat absorbed WITHOUT a temperature increase and causes water to expand, leading to sea level rise.
This only applies to phase transitions, not simple expansion. The general expansion wouldn't occur, without an increase in temperature. It's called, "thermal expansion."

cont...

ubavontuba
2 / 5 (25) Sep 22, 2013
In addition to the latent heat, additional heat has been added raising the temperature about 0.3F, causing more thermal expansion.
Sure, in the past ...but not currently.

Antarctic ice is increasing very slightly, nowhere near the level of Arctic and Greenland ice lost.
Recent studies have shown that Greenland ice is more stable than previously thought, and may be growing (particularly in the interior). Arctic sea ice loss is largely irrelevant to sea level, but it is up 60% from last years's minimum.

How are those cherrys?

A textbook example of propagandists holding onto their lies and their dullard armies refusing to alter their obsessions.
Jets started to be used worldwide around 1950. In the few years at the beginning of the Fifties, tornado numbers stopped being constant and started creeping up, a new species of cloud was seen and, as the report states, temperature started climbing erapidly. In 1997, chemtrails were claimed to start only because they were seen in huge numbers. And signs associated with climate change from the worst hurricane season ever to the disappearance of Arctic sea ice began. Carbon dioxide continued to grow in the air, but temperatures leveled off.
The evidence is completely consistent with if not indicative of chemtrails, the doping of the air with weather modification chemicals from high flying jets, causing climate change, in 1997 they because visible because the air was saturated and, now saturated, the condition of the atmosphere won't change much.

And yet according to climatologists, 17 years of data is too short a time, and that the current pause in warming would have to last "30 to 40 years at least to break the long-term global warming trend",.... twice the length of time as the previous warming trend.

B.S.. Now you're just trying to cover your own incompetence. Your reference alone proves higher temperatures are normal, as the temperatures were higher in the 1930's. Besides the record and late freeze this year, last year they had record snowfall, in June! And had the coldest day in June since 1928.

B.S yourself and LOL to boot

You continue to fixate on weather - as any single event is, however extreme. I do not trumpet AGW because of a heatwave - it is just as fraudulent on this side as your cherry-picking cold events for Sweden.

Call me incompetent all you like, it does not make me so or the consensus climate science. I don't subscribe either to the idea that the world experts in something are incompetent just because you or any other ideologically challenged or Google-armed fanatic says so.
Nor do I subscribe to the bizarre idea that the world's climate scientists are in on a some sort of socialist plot. Reply if you wish but I'll be taking Mr Twain's advice from now.

I have exposed Blotto's mischief and he doesn't like it one bit, thus he is constantly warring with every comment I make and making up all kinds of shit about me. He has done the same to others with whom he disagreed, or those he believes to be me (but who are not).

As for the rest of you, Theghostofotto1923 prefers to set each one of you against each other by using his sockpuppets to downvote you and get everyone thinking that someone they disagreed with on a topic are doing the downvoting.

You should all be aware by now of Blotto's mental illnesses & sockpuppets and take that into consideration before accusing each other.

Life moves on Ryggy - as you're so fond of saying, climate's changed in the past and mankind has adapted .... well we do so again, but this time by curbing our polluting behaviour (though climate has long term changes to come even then). History is riddled on occupations that have been abandoned by advancement in technology and changes in fashion and behavior.
Also just because the actions necessary to counter CO2 are painful for some does not invalidate the science. You know - you're working backwards there.

MBTE was forced by the govt to replace lead. MBTE contaminated groundwater and was mandated by the govt to be replaced by ethanol. There was not enough ethanol production in the US to meet the requirements and the ethanol had to be from USA prompting US farmers to grow all the corn they could plant. Ethanol production spiked food prices.
Of course there are all sorts of crony 'capitalism' lobby efforts were implemented by the govt because they have the power to do so.
Another tragic case of top-down planning was Ceaușescu in Romania who ordered all abortions and birth control banned in order to increase the population. Of course the fertility rate was low because of the horrible socialist economy. The extra babies born could not be cared for by parents and were handed over to the state which did worse.

You know @R2, you ask a hard question but one that needs to be faced and addressed politically
What will the AGWites do to pay for all the jobs lost by the coal miners, the manufacturers of coal mining equipment being laid off in Milwaukee

The question rephrased with out R2's cynicism is; "What will the coal industry do without customers"? As bad as that will be for the workers (and the support economy), it's actually not a bad thing to happen.

First environmentally reduced coal use stops the sick practice of Mountain Top removal, cleans the air and removes mercury, radon and other toxic pollutants from coal plants.
Coal makes 2.86 tons of CO2 per ton of Coal burned in air. It doesn't take much physics to see that coal has been a major culprit in the rise of global temperatures since the rise of the industrial age.

So coal really does need to be removed from mankind's sources of primary energy. As to how the works feel; well everybody needs a progressive job maker.

Poor Vendietardietardtard. Still doesn't get it. Ryggie is right, VD. The U.S. is experiencing massive job layoffs or work hours being cut in half. This is not only because of Obamacare that might pass, but also because of the crushing regulations and huge tax bills that job-making companies have to pay to the gubderment for existing and providing jobs.

No jobs = no paycheck = no taxes paid - no funding for AGWite "scientists".

Coal Miners will be laid off, the Keystone pipeline will not be completed, fracking will cease... you know, all the stuff that keeps us warm and cozy in winter will stop. That's when VD and his crony capitalist friends will have to ride their tricycles - no car

"What makes you so sure that coal miners are all Conservatives instead of Democrats?" - SoxTard

Their low IQ's.

Excluding the managers of the Republican Cattle, do you really think there are many Coal Miners who have university degrees?

Low IQs are endemic to low-information voters..i.e,, the ones who voted for BHObama because of his race.
Low IQs are endemic to Hollywood actors, producers, etc. who would not come out against Obama's war plans for Syria because they didn't want to be seen as anti-Black. Ask Ed Asner.
Low IQs are endemic to Republicans In Name Only (RINO) who don't know what their constituents really want...and don't care.
Low IQs are endemic to those who bitch about coal miners who only want to earn a decent wage and care for their families, and who imagine that all workers have low IQ.

Then who Interests do those Republican Traitors serve?

Well VD...If you look closely, realllly close at what's going on in America. you MIGHT notice (if your IQ level is good enough to comprehend true Capitalism), that corporations are made up of PEOPLE. And those PEOPLE are not concerned with Republican or Democrat, or whatever is in power at the moment. Those PEOPLE are concentrating on either creating jobs, or keeping their jobs.
A nation is only as good as its workers and those who provide the work. The workers are not prevented from working by the providers of that work; it is the GUBDERMENT that is making it harder for the providers to keep them

@JohnGee...I haven't read www.Drudgereport. com yet. So you're saying that the Senate has passed Obamacare?

If that is the case, then Americans will find that they cannot keep the health plan they wish to keep, and the quality of their health care will diminish. It's a bad tradeoff.
If it is not repealed, then that is the end of our healthcare system. Already doctors are planning to give up the practice and medical students are having second thoughts about becoming doctors. This is your future, as well as everyone else's.
Vendietardietardtard is, of course, elated that we now have the very expensive Obamacare (Socialized medicine). So, instead of Canadians coming to the U.S. for their health care, they will go to other countries. Zimbabwe anyone?

Then come the worms and other horrible things to eat their flesh and gnaw on their bones and crawl in and out of their eye sockets.
But the ones that really get the special treatment are the ones who cursed God and denied His existence as though they knew without a doubt and had the evidence for their assertion.

For the record, crony capitalists are just another faction of the socialism that depend the state to control the economy, control their competition so they can profit and use those profits to buy the political power to keep them in business.
Crony capitalists joined with 'progressives' over 100 years ago to being the Regulatory State to control competition.
Every telecom business, Google, etc are now cronies of the state, dependent upon the state to regulate their competition and in return, they must provide the state with the personal data requested by the state to spy everyone.
Crony capitalism is a requirement of a fascist/socialist state where where the govt controls private property for its benefit.

The reason why you forgot is of course because the fantasy world you live in is defined by what the Conservative Blogosphere tells you is true, and since they have spent the last several months deceiving you about the law, you began to believe that it was not passed.

Wrong...read what I said.

You are an easily duped, stooge. A useful idiot for the Republican deceit machine.

All true.

And yet you have claimed to employ no sock puppet alter-ego's.

That's exactly right. I don't pretend that my puppets are not me...and no one ever asks. I also don't downrate anyones' comments/opinions. I've had some great discussions on science topics with very intelligent people in certain threads that I enter while in my other user names.

Liar, Liar, Diapers on Fire.

Is your God telling you to be a congenital liar?

It seems that you are only too willing to believe a congenital liar like BAKOON/Theghostofotto. BAKOON says "No, no, quite the opposite. I am but filth compared to Vendicar Decarian. He is legend. Truly a troll qua troll".

Dunning-Kruger is/was a favorite insult that FrankHerbert used to intimidate those who could not be intimidated otherwise, isn't that right, FrankHerbert/BAKOON? FrankHerbert tried it on several people and is now trying it on me.
Dunning-Kruger describes Theghostofotto1923 and ALL of its sockpuppets, as well as DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER.
This is why Theghostofotto1923 likes to disrupt discussions in most threads, due to his D.I.D. and Schizophrenia.

Yup, and I'd say that 30% of the Republican party suffers from the same mental illness.

Evidence of that?

So to Rygg, Capitalists are Socialists,

VD reads at a third grade level, misinterpreting CRONY CAPITALISM for CAPITALISM.

From earlier posts he has told us that George Bush was a socialist, that Christ was a Capitalist Libertarian, that Obama isn't American, that Obama's birth certificate is a fraud, and that Science is a Religion.

All true.

Rygg claims to be against Force and Fraud, but wants to force illegal immigrants to leave America, and is personally a walking, talking, example of Fraud.

Drive illegals out of the U.S.

One wonders how much more upside down and inside out Rygg's Non-thinking, free-thinking as he puts it, can get.

We have wondered that about Vendietardietardtard too

It is as if VD negates every reality and presumes it is real.

He is suffering from a mental disease for sure.

You mean those businesses are going to be able to do the same work with less workers?

Obamacare is law of the land. Less workers is better than no workers. Even the SEIU is mad at Obama even while still supporting the regime.

If they were competent business men, weren't they planning on doing that all along? And if they weren't then clearly they are incompetent.

Incompetency, LYING, secrecy, spying on citizens is endemic to the Obama regime. And now comes invasion of sexual privacy in Obamacare.

So which is it Rygg? Are American Businessmen incompetent or will they actually need employees to do the work that their employees do?

Curious minds want to know?

A 20 hour work week instead of 40...thanks to Obamacare

VD on the other hand, wants to know nothing.

Which employer? Who has confirmed his cuts? How is he managing to perform the same work with fewer people? Does he plant magic beans or something?

NAMES...WE WANT NAMES!!

Tell us more about how American Businesses are so inefficient and ineptly run that they can afford to fire a large percentage of their staff and still keep their businesses running as before?

Obamacare will result in shorter work week and lower pay scales for workers, higher taxation for employers to pay for Obamacare, and new regulations may result in businesses closing. Additionally, power company rates go up and infrastructure goes down because 40 hour wk will be thing of the past.

Sorry, Sucker. But you have been duped yet again by corporate Propagandists.

Poor Rygg, he likes to whine and moan about economics but remains blissfully unaware that the U.S. has been out of recession and growing, since the beginning of 2009, thanks to federal stimulus that kept the U.S. economy out of a real economic depression that Tea Baggers were demanding be created.

False. Fed monetary stimuli to certain corporations and banks that were favored by Obama was a waste of taxpayer money, like Solyndra and other solars that went out of business soon after.

Awww, you poor baby. The economy isn't growing in your direction but is benefitting primarily the wealthiest Americans thanks to the Libertarian economic policies that you have been promoting

Most wealthy Americans are Democrats. John & Teresa Heinz Kerry; the Kennedys; Senator Nancy Pelosi; the Clintons; AlGore; Steven Spielberg; and many others.

For the broken record is more like it.

Sox is just lying here. TARP was a Bush Program.

Further the money has been repaid.

"like Solyndra" - SoxTard

Virtually the entire growth in the U.S. debt under Obama is the result of extending income security payments to the unemployed.

Solyndra got nothing but federal loan guarantees of course, but the fact is of the 6 trillion in additional debt accrued during the last 6 years, Solyndra - for all the Republican whining about it, accounts for only only 1/12,000 of it.

If Sox had any legitimate complaint about Obama supporting American industry then he should be able to find thousands of other American companies who also received federal loan guarantees on the order of a billion bucks and then went bankrupt.

The fact is... There aren't any others.

What Republicans did with Solyndra was block additional funding for the company CONT...

"Obamacare will result in shorter work week and lower pay scales for workers" - SoxTard

You seem to think that repeating the same lie over and over again will make it true.

The fact is, employers do not employ people because they enjoy the company. They do so because the employees work, and their labor produces a profit for the employer.

Employers work their employees to the extent that their profits per employee are maximized.

If employers decide to reduce work hours then they will necessarily lower their profits as a result since they are already working their employees to their maximum profit levels.

Republicans know nothing about economics. They just make up any bullshit that justifies their moronic political ideology.
