Psychologists say 'group-level narcissism' linked to negative attitudes toward immigrants

Aug 06, 2013

Feelings of entitlement and superiority that go beyond patriotism and love of country may be a key predictor for Americans who will feel or behave negatively toward undocumented Latino immigrants, according to a study from The University of Texas at Arlington.

Researchers looked at those enhanced feelings of superiority - referred to as group-level narcissism – along with a factor called national in-group identification in a new work to be published in the August issue of the Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Science. National in-group identification happens when a person's individual identity is strongly tied to and dependent on their membership in a group, like being an American.

Previous research has found that strong in-group identity is not necessarily a predictor of toward other groups. The UT Arlington team found, however, that attitudes changed when a strong in-group identity was paired with an average or above average group narcissism. Then, negative attitudes toward undocumented Latino immigrants were more likely.

"When you look at the rhetoric surrounding undocumented, Latino immigrants in the United States, the perspectives vary widely – from those who characterize as criminals to those who support expanding full citizenship rights," said Patricia Lyons, a graduate of the psychology doctoral program in the UT Arlington College of Science and a member of the research team. "We were interested in understanding how and why attitudes varied so widely from a psychological perspective. The group narcissism measure gave us a way to understand these attitudes. "

Lyons co-authored the study with Jared Kenworthy, a UT Arlington associate , and Ph.D. candidate Lauren E. Coursey. Lyons is currently on the psychology faculty at Mountain View College in Dallas.

The team surveyed 223 university students with tools designed to measure their national in-group identity and propensity for group-level narcissism, which is defined as "an inflated image of one's group based on feelings of superiority, entitlement and the need for constant attention and praise at the collective level."

For example, the test assessing group narcissism asked participants to rank how strongly they agreed with statements such as "If America ruled the world it would be a better place" and "America is the best country in the world."

The newly published paper builds on earlier research by Kenworthy and Lyons about the relationship between in-group identification, group-level narcissism and negative attitudes toward Arab-Americans. That study also found that group-level narcissism was linked to negative attitudes.

The researchers believe that increases in group-level may be prompted by perceived threats to someone's group from an outside group. Those perceived threats could center on a loss of valuable resources or job opportunities, or threats to one's personal beliefs. The team hopes to examine the threat component in future research.

At a time when conversations about immigration reform can often turn ugly, the research team hopes their latest work adds to understanding about what can cause divisive attitudes and how those relationships might be improved.

Still, there are no easy answers, Kenworthy said.

"One thing we do know from previous research is that mere knowledge about, or even contact with, another group is not adequate to reduce negative attitudes," Kenworthy said. "First, members of different groups must be given the opportunity to come together in a setting of mutual goals, equal status and cooperation."

garbage. As an immigrant, I am thankful to be allowed into the USA. I find it distasteful, disgusting, and degraded when criminal aliens, people who have broken the law, get any benefit from living here.

The reason people don't hear more from Legal Aliens living in the USA, is FEAR. WE have no one to protect our interests and we are well aware that if we make any waves, we will be thrown out of the country. All it takes is ONE government official not to like us, and everything we have worked for is gone.

Any citizen of the USA who supports criminal aliens, please give me your address. WHY, so I can break into your house and start living there. I'll also demand you feed me, cloth me, and allow me to bring my children to live there as well. If you call the cops, I'll call you a hypocrite. WHY, THE USA is your home, and anyone who does not abide by immigration rules, should be thrown out. To do less, insults legal hard working immigrants.

When you call the police, I'll say I'm an undocumented guest and that you are a racist for calling the cops. (BTW, I won't do this, as I'm not a criminal and unlike Progressives, do not condone criminal behavior)

And why should I unclog your toilets unless you pay me? Since I don't own your home, why should I care about it and keep it clean. Once I trash your home, there are other homes I can become an undocumented guest in.

Oh, I forgot, you subscribe to the undocumented noble guest farce and believe that, even though I broke the law by breaking your door down, eating your food, sleeping in your bed uninvited, I am an honorable person and deserve more respect than someone you actually invited in.

I think all Americans should learn about what it takes to become a LEGAL Immigrant into the USA. Talk to someone who has gone through the process of TN, H1B, L1, and Green Card process. Ask them how it felt.

Once you know about the Process and what LEGAL Immigrants put up with to become citizens, you will have more respect for Legal Immigrants, your own citizenship, and you will have a distaste for the criminal aliens who make a mockery of those who follow the law.

Ah, but see - if we want to take this full to the hilt - you depend on income from me to send to your relatives who don't live in my house, but outside on the street. So, me threatening to call the cops will coerce you to instead live in my unheated/un-air-conditioned garage because it's better than the street - and you won't go to the cops for fear they will kick you out of my house.

If anything, I'd rather have an undocumented house guest rather than your sorry ass. I actually have recent immigrant neighbors; they are nothing like you, thankfully.

GMR, so you think it's ok to take advantage of Criminal Aliens?

Any American who knowingly hires a Criminal Alien because they are cheaper than hiring either a Legal Alien, or an American Citizen, is a thief and scum, no better than a slave owner.

Why? Because instead of paying fair wages, they will pay a criminal less so that they can benefit.

So GMR, you personally have no issues abusing criminals? So you personally have no issues reducing wages for Americans and those who follow the law? So you personally have no issues in failing to pay honest wages to someone?

How to US citizens who immigrated or were stuck in the US (Mexicans were living in UT, AZ, TX, etc before becoming states) feel about illegal aliens from anywhere?
From my observations, it is the illegal alien who feels entitled because the law won't be enforced to deport them.
But, try to follow the law, apply at a US embassy and be questioned and treated like a criminal for FOLLOWING the law.

Problem is these Government approved doctors are quacks. They do nothing BUT do medical exams because no one after being examined by these quacks would EVER use them as a GPs.

However your answers are very relieving of the Progressives mindset.
1. You say you care about criminal aliens, but you have no qualm about abusing them by paying them a lower wage.
2. You will throw those who follow the law under the bus.
3. You will punish those who follow the rules.
4. You spit upon those that have waited for years, paid thousands of dollars, put up with government bureaucrats who scrutinize every form, regulations that say you need to get an exam from incompetent government approved doctors, those that proved that they have no criminal histories, to Legally immigrate.
5. You do not care about your country or those legally here. Indeed, if you can lower wages by allowing criminals into the country, you have no issues with that.

How about some immigration scenario's.
1. an immigrant gets a job here in the US with a H1B. He has 1 child who is 16, 8, 5 and after one year in the US has another one (who is a US citizen)
2. two years later, one of his children who is now 18, must pay out of country tuition for university.
3. After 5 years in the country (on his second H1B, and just a few days before he receives his work permit) he loses his job. Since he cannot find another company to hire him within 30 days he has to leave the country. His American child is 5 years old and now is forced to leave the country, his 13 and 10 year old are forced to leave the school and culture they have grown up in.

Illegal aliens compose about 33% of the federal prison system (federal prison because most of the crimes are interstate).
They have bankrupted many hospitals because they don't pay. A part of the rise in medical expenses is because of criminal aliens. How many Americans cannot afford or access healthcare because of criminal aliens?

Tribalism. Why are they so afraid to say it?

"According to Eibl-Eibesfeldt (1970 et seq.), destructive intergroup aggression in humans depends, to a large extent, on "cultural pseudospeciation". Owing to this process, first analyzed by Erikson (1964, 1966, 1984), ethnic groups tend to perceive one another as different species and to behave accordingly. Therefore, war appears to be the result of our innate repulsion for outsiders, not a simple effect of aggressive drive. By instigating intergroup aggression, pseudospeciation favors intragroup solidarity, friendship, and altruism."

Hey Rygg,

Did you know that the background checks that schools do to "ensure" that people with no criminal history work with children is a joke with Criminal Aliens.

Background checks rely on name and social security number, do you think the criminal Aliens home country criminal records will be checked? So a criminal alien rapist pedophile, who just arrived in the US, with no US criminal history can easily pass the background check that the schools use to "ensure" kids are safe.

Anyone who is a green card holder needs to prove that they have no criminal history in their home country. Same goes with those under different visa's who have applied for firearms permits, CPL's etc.

Ayn Rand on unrestricted immigration.

"No one has the right to pursue his self-interest by law or by force, which is what you're suggesting. You want to forbid immigration on the grounds that it lowers your standard of living–which isn't true, though if it were true, you'd still have no right to close the borders. You're not entitled to any "self-interest" that injures others, especially when you can't prove that open immigration affects your self-interest. You can't claim that anything others may do–for example, simply through competition–is against your self interest." - Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand, an Illegal Immigrant, guilty of perjury

"As a vehement anti-Bolshevist, she knew that she would die waiting in line if she applied for permission to permanently relocate to America, although that's exactly what she intended to do. Temporary tourist visas were easier to land, but only for those who could prove they didn't plan to settle here. So what did Rand do? She committed perjury. She convinced an American visa officer that she had a fiancé waiting for her in Russia whom she intended to marry after a six-month visit with her relatives in Chicago.

But Rand instead married an American citizen in 1929, gaining a path to citizenship. According to Mimi Gladstein's biography, Rand timed her wedding before her visa, which she had gotten extended, finally expired."

Here is my fix for the immigration problem.
1. Grant Special Amnesty. This Amnesty would start 120-160 days into the future and is special (see point 3)
2. Grant 10-11 million work visa's for no skilled jobs. The visa applicant must apply for these visa's in their home country, the applicant must be able to speak and comprehend English, the applicant must prove they have no criminal history, and must have a job waiting for them.
3. The Amnesty on point 1 is this, any person applying for the no skilled job visa, will not be investigated to see if they have ever been in the USA illegally until after the 120-160 days. If any proof can be found that the applicant was in the USA illegally after the amnesty date, they will be denied forever getting any visa or immigration rights into the USA.
4. After the 120-160 days, anyone caught in the USA illegally is to be expelled immediately. Anyone hiring, supporting and criminal alien will receive jail time.

One thing I forgot to add is that there can be no criminal history in the USA at any time or you will not get the visa.

What will this policy do? People who are currently criminal aliens who have learned English, have a job, have not been arrested in the USA, have no criminal history in their country, who actually want to live as honest immigrants will voluntarily leave so that they can get these visas.

Since these people now have visa's they can no longer be taken advantage of by Progressives like GMR, they can fully be integrated into a culture of laws.

The USA will benefit by having knowing that those who are entering know English, are not criminals, and at worst have only a temporary shortage of unskilled workers, which actually may help the economic outlook for unskilled black labor.

Grant children of H1B holders the same rights now held by Criminal Aliens when it comes to instate tuition. Allowing H1B holders to easily move between employers, and have an easier time getting through the green card process.

But hey, Progressives don't care about Legal Aliens, only about abusing and taking advantages of Criminal Aliens.

"Allen and Debra VanHoozer are mourning the loss of their child, 24-year-old Heather, after an illegal immigrant who was not deported by U.S. authorities after a series of run-ins with law enforcement. The Mexican national was allowed to stay in the U.S. after numerous drug arrests, resulting in him allegedly killing the young woman by operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated."

You are right Progressives do not care about Criminal Aliens, they just like them because they vote progressive, they help keep the Black Skinned Population in poverty, they increase crime, they help increase cost of healthcare,

I'll say it again, anyone who supports Criminal Aliens denigrates and spits in the face of legal immigrants.

I wonder how the 'liberals' would respond to opening the door to immigrants from all over the the world? Especially from those countries where English is a second language like India, Taiwan, Philippines, Europe,....
How would these countries respond to the expected outflow of human capital? Would they use carrots or sticks to keep their best, brightest and most ambitious from leaving?

Psychologists say 'group-level narcissism' linked to negative attitudes toward immigrants
The community of physicists (and whatever else experts) doesn't like the free thinkers and similar outsiders from the same reason: it's too immersed in its narcissistic perception of its own qualification and level of expertise.

This has been so stated by those calling themselves climatologists. Unless one is a climatologist, they cannot comment on global warming.

Greek PM: "Samaras wasn't above making ironic comments, either - blaming his region's problems on illegal immigration:

"I believe that the problems have to do with illegal immigration, internal turbulence in various countries, and even, unfortunately, the problem of terrorism."

And, in an interesting word choice, he called for the U.S. and Europe to "liberalize" their economic potential:

Wow...these beard scratching d-bag liberal professors would do better to analyze the cognitive dissonance that drives the minds of socialist that somehow think large collective governments are conducive to human rights. It seems wanting to control the quality of life in your own country by limiting third-world behaviorism and all its fallout, has become an abnormal thought process to these idiots. Libertarian Party Platform: Immigration

IMMIGRATION

We hold that human rights should not be denied or abridged on the basis of nationality. We condemn massive roundups of Hispanic Americans and others by the federal government in its hunt for individuals not possessing required government documents. We strongly oppose all measures that punish employers who hire undocumented workers. Such measures repress free enterprise, harass workers, and systematically discourage employers from hiring Hispanics.

Undocumented non-citizens should not be denied the fundamental freedom to labor and to move about unmolested. Furthermore, immigration must not be restricted for reasons of race, religion, political creed, age, or sexual preference.

We therefore call for the elimination of all restrictions on immigration, the abolition of the Immigration and Naturalization Service and the Border Patrol, and a declaration of full amnesty for all people who have entered the country illegally. We oppose government welfare and resettlement payments to non-citizens just as we oppose government welfare payments to all other persons.

Similarly, Unless one has a medical degree, they should refrain from giving advice on the science of medicine.

Doctors generally know better than Tards, and this goes for doctors of climatology as much as it does for doctors of medicine.

It is self evident that RyggTard has barely finished public school and yet he feels that his ideology based "science" is superior to fact based science.

I don't advise people accept medical advice from Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck. The same goes with any other form of scientific advice from such people.

Conservative Retards can't get enough of it.

""My name is Laura Wilkerson," she said. "My husband George and I live just outside Houston, Texas. We've been married 25 years and we've raised three children. Our youngest son, Joshua, was brutally murdered on Nov. 16, 2010, by a kid who was a classmate of him. We found out later he was from Belize, brought here illegally by his parents when he was about 10 years old."
"Wilkerson said she will always remember the look on the detective's face when he told her the suspect in custody, Hermilio Moralez, was not in America legally.

"I'll never forget looking in that detective's eyes as he was telling me, 'yeah this kid is in the country illegally,'" Mrs. Wilkerson told the crowd in Richmond. "I said 'where are his parents?' He said, 'we can't ask him.' He couldn't ask them because it was a sanctuary city at that time. "

How sad. RyggTard the Rodeo clown is now looking for work.

"The fair did not reveal the clown's identity.

During a bull riding contest on Sunday, the clown appeared wearing a rubber mask of the president with an upside down broomstick trailing from his backside, as if it were a tail. The audience was asked, over a public address system, if it wanted to see Mr. Obama "run down by a bull." Many people present clapped and cheered, according to one witness, Perry Beam.

"It was feeling like some kind of Klan rally," said Mr. Beam."

It is illegal in America for immigrant parents to bring their children with them?

Another anti-family initiative brought to you by the Republican party no doubt.
